MONDAY morning, Noah drove them to the UNF campus and stopped in front of the building that housed the music department.

“Babe, the parking lot is over there,” Tom said, pointing.

“I know,” Noah said, “but I wanted to get you as close to the door as possible.”

“I need to learn to walk from the parking lot on crutches.”

“Yeah, but not today. Maybe if you’re a good boy, I’ll let you walk from the building to the parking lot after class.”

“Yes, Mother,” Tom said. “And don’t even think about helping me out of the car. I’ve got to learn to manage.”

“Oh, I’ll think about it.”

“Yeah, but don’t do it.”

Tom managed to extricate himself from the passenger seat, and once he was on the crutches, headed for the building. By the time Noah had parked the car and caught up with him, he was halfway to his office.

“You could have waited for me,” Noah said.

“I didn’t want to slow you down.”

“You’ve got an answer for everything, don’t you?”

“I try.”

When Tom was settled at his desk, he said, “I’ve got some paperwork to do before my first class.”

“Are you gonna be okay?”

“I don’t know why not. My classroom is just down the hall.”

“What about students with individual lessons?” Noah said.

“Most of them are tomorrow in one of the practice rooms.”

“I hate to leave you like this.”

“Give me a kiss, then go to class,” Tom said.

“Okay.”

Noah kissed Tom thoroughly and went to the door, which opened before he could turn the handle.

“Come on in, Dr. Ambrose,” Noah said. “Maybe you can talk him into not overdoing things.”

“I’ll try,” she said.

Noah closed the door behind him, and Tom said, “Have a seat, Agnes. Excuse me for not getting up right now.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she said.

“What brings you to my office today?”

“A little bird called to tell me that you’d been spotted on crutches, so I had to see for myself.”

“I was planning to pay a call on you after my classes end for the day.”

“And now you won’t have to. How are you, really?”

“I’m okay. My right leg was broken in two places, but one of the places was only something called a hairline fracture. So I’m stuck with crutches for about six weeks.”

“What exactly happened?” she said.

When he’d finished telling her about the accident, she said, “Sounds like it could have been a lot worse.”

“Yeah, and the good news is that I can still sit at a console and play. Which means that I’ll be on the bench next Sunday morning, as usual.”

“How many concert engagements will you have to cancel?”

“Two.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” she said.

“It’s not a problem. Both of them can be rescheduled.”

“That’s a good positive attitude.”

“It’s the only kind to have.”

“On that note, I’ll get back to my office.”

“Thanks for stopping by.”

When the time came, he went to his classroom and the day sped by. Noah was hovering outside the classroom when Tom’s last class ended.

“Ready to go home?” Noah said when Tom left the classroom.

“I need to make a stop by my office and gather some papers.
