Chapter Six

Xavier felt like the world’s biggest asshole and he could take responsibility for that. He could even take responsibility for leading Russell on and initiating the sex between them. What he couldn’t do was change anything. That was beyond frustrating to him. Xavier prided himself on being a man who fixed things. He was kind, compassionate, and he was a fixer-upper. He hadn’t called Edwyna out on her affair or turned Miguel in to the police when he’d started doing drugs. He’d forgiven Edwyna and had put Miguel in rehab.

He’d gone into politics because he wanted to fix problems. Knowing that he couldn’t fix a problem that he himself had caused made him want to find the closest bottle of hard liquor and throw himself inside it. He also knew that liquor didn’t solve anything. That knowledge didn’t stop him from wanting some, though. He hadn’t had one sip after everything had gone to shit with Edwyna, though he certainly would have been justified, because while his own infidelity had been exposed, so had hers. He hadn’t gone after her for their kids, but she’d had no qualms about going after him and had made sure to tell every last person she could find about his ‘perversions’ and ‘sexual proclivities’. He hadn’t had one drink during all of that, but one experience with a gorgeous, blond twink and he was ready to climb into a bottle of Scotch. Xavier missed his kids, desperately, and he wished he could talk to them, see them or something, but Edwyna was still angry and Xavier stayed away because of her anger. He regretted that decision in that moment. Nothing helped clear his head more than playing The Temptations or Just Dance with his kids.

He sighed heavily as he walked into his kitchen and turned on the light. He hadn’t stayed around to see what kind of reaction Russell had to his words. He didn’t want to see the younger man get angry or, worse, cry or whatever. Xavier had made enough people cry in his lifetime, he so wasn’t trying to find himself in that predicament again.

Memories of Edwyna crying harshly as she threw item after item at him—books, vases, her high-heeled shoes—flashed across his mind and he winced as he opened the refrigerator. He caught sight of the large bottle of Irish whiskey he’d purchased the day he’d moved into the cabin, putting it into the fridge absent-mindedly and forgetting to take it out, and he paused. He once again considered pulling out the bottle and drinking the contents straight from the opening but decided against it. With a disgusted sigh, Xavier pulled out the container of bourbon marinated chicken. He’d intended to cook all six pieces and eat them over the next couple of days. But with Russell in the cabin, his plans would have to change. Luckily, he had enough food in his cabinets, freezer and refrigerator to sustain both him and Russell for a while until they could leave.
