CHAPTER TWELVE

After making a few calls and pulling some strings with the warden, Zane managed to arrange an appointment with Wesley Parker less than two hours after his meeting with Mac and Jessie. The more Zane delved into the case, the more something seemed amiss.

On the face of it, Callaway seemed guilty. So much of the evidence pointed toward him. But there was something about Mac being a coldhearted killer that didn’t sit right with Zane. Over his years as a detective, he’d learned to listen to his gut. This thing with Omer Demir definitely called for further investigation. As for the debacle with the DNA… Who knew what that meant?

Someone had made a major mistake somewhere. Zane only hoped it hadn’t occurred two decades ago. He couldn’t imagine the uproar that would cause. That an innocent man had been locked up in jail. It wouldn’t be the first time it had happened, but it didn’t happen often and Zane couldn’t remember when it had happened last. It would only be a matter of time before the media got wind of it and then all hell would break loose.

In the early days of DNA testing, the science was far less exact. These days, people relied on it as almost gospel truth. Television shows had a lot to answer for in that regard, though Zane couldn’t deny the value of DNA and its accuracy and he was continually surprised at how quickly technology progressed. There was no doubt the advances in science had made detective work a whole lot easier… But, every now and then they got it wrong. The technology was only as good as the human using it.

With a sigh, he swung the unmarked police car into the long paved driveway that led up to the high chain-link fence that surrounded the perimeter of Long Bay Correctional Center. The fence was topped with razor wire and the sharp edges glinted dangerously in the afternoon sun. Guards in the nearby watchtower patrolled with machine guns, a constant reminder that they took escape attempts seriously.

After showing his credentials to the security guard manning the gate, Zane drove up to the visitors’ parking lot and pulled into a vacant spot. He glanced across at his partner.

“Let’s hope we get the answer we’re looking for,” he murmured.

Willie nodded in agreement. “What are you going to tell Parker?”

Zane compressed his lips into a thin line. He’d spent the past hour going over his angle of attack in his mind. No matter how he looked at it, there was only one way to proceed.

“I’m going to have to come clean with him,” he said grimly. “I don’t have any other choice. The fact is, he couldn’t have fathered Melissa Sorensen’s unborn baby and yet his DNA is a match for the child. We need to get to the bottom of it. And fast.”

Willie nodded, his expression equally somber. The men climbed out of the squad car and made their way toward reception. After emptying their pockets and going through the usual security checks, they were shown into a small interview room.
