Sahara’s on a Plane to Munich

Happy. Sahara described herself as happy. She enjoyed her job in the campus bookstore. Why not? The hours were good though the pay was certainly not the best. Her supervisors didn’t pitch a fit about her taking time off, either. If she had to study, they understood. And since she had two majors and two minors, it was very good that they understood. Another reason Sahara loved her job was because she loved books and she got a discount on them at the bookstore, and that made her happy.

She was about to get degrees in both International Finance and Industrial Management. Though it might mean leaving her hometown, Sahara was guaranteed to get a job. She was probably never going to have the freedom to write again, but she had accepted that her writing was less than stellar—spotty was how one of her creative writing professors described it—and that it would be something she did in her spare time in the dark when no one was around.

Sahara means moon, she would tell people. Nobody cared. She was just another black girl with a funny name. Sahara was a common word, or so she thought. It was guaranteed to be the most famous desert. Forget the Gobi. No one in the world apparently knew there was a Gobi somewhere out there in the Eastern Hemisphere. Still people consistently pronounced her name wrong. She hated it when people said her name wrong. “Sahara” was printed on her nametag at work and she absolutely hated that. Not because she didn’t like the name but because inevitably some student’s mother would spend thirty minutes saying Sahara’s name wrong, wasting her time and never even getting around to what it was the customer wanted in the first place. One customer had said that she was just going to call her Sarah. Sahara went home sick after that particular episode.

Sahara typically entertained herself by watching couples when they came in the store. She always watched couples. Sahara would have liked being part of a couple but her boyfriend always seemed to live separate from her. They were physically separate because they didn’t occupy the same abode. They were also separate in the sense that they were rarely together unless there was something they needed to do. Quality alone time was a foreign concept. Cuddling was out of the question, too, which was fine for Sahara. She could barely stand being touched unless she was madly in love. Except for sex; Sahara liked all the touching that went along with sex. Technically, they were a couple. Sahara was lonely all the same.

Sahara was happy with her relationship. Corey was a very nice guy. Not too sweet or sexy and not bad for her, either. Happy, happy, happy. Corey was very funny. She liked that, and in the beginning she wanted to introduce him to all her friends. Corey did not want to be introduced to all her friends. Not one of these meetings went well.
