The funeral for Mr. Jacobs had started. It was a small funeral with mostly family and a few friends. Everyone was there who was supposed to be...except one. Brett hadn’t shown up yet. Terry was constantly looking around, trying to find his brother, wondering why he wasn’t there. He said he would be. Terry didn’t understand a lot of what was going on, or what was going on in Brett’s head, but if he missed their own father’s funeral, he wasn’t sure he’d ever forgive that.

About halfway through the ceremony, Brett arrived. He flip-flopped on attending several times, not sure he wanted to go through talking to anybody or receiving condolences, or anyone giving him dirty looks. But in the end, it was about his father and no one else. As he walked through the field, Terry continued looking around, finally seeing him approach. He was relieved that his brother had made it, though Brett stayed in the back, not that close to anyone.

After the ceremony was over, people started dispersing. Almost everyone stopped in their tracks when they saw Brett standing there. Most went over to him and shook his hand or gave him a pat on the shoulder. Some even gave him a hug. It was surprising to him as it was a much warmer reception than he was expecting. He didn’t get any cold shoulders or icy stares like he thought he would. Once everyone was gone, Brett moved closer, hoping to have a few final words with his father. Terry told his family to go back to the car and wait for him as he stayed behind as well.

“Looks like you got a police tail up there,” Jacobs said, observing the marked patrol car in the parking lot.

“They’re watching over us for a little bit to make sure we’re not the next target.”

Jacobs nodded, actually relieved. It meant he wouldn’t have to be the one to do it and he could focus on taking out the rest of Mallette’s mob.

“Brett, tell me what’s going on.”

Jacobs sighed, not really wanting to talk about it, but feeling like he should since his brother could possibly get caught up in it. “I’m in a war, Terry.”

“With who?”

“Still only one guy. Mallette. He took out Val and the kids. He killed dad too.”

“But why? I don’t understand why he’s targeting you.”

“Because I’m the one who sent him to prison. Val and the kids were payback.”

“And Dad?” Terry asked.

“Retribution.”

“For what?”

“What I’ve been doing.”

“Which is?”

“I’ve been taking them out,” Brett said. “I’ve already killed the two men responsible for Val and the kids. I’ve also killed eight more of his men.”

“Jesus, Brett. Who do you think you are? Rambo? You can’t just go around killing people. Is that why you quit the department? To do that?”

“They’ve gotta pay, Terry. They’ve gotta pay.”

“What ever happened to letting the law do its job?”

“The law doesn’t work for people like them. You see any of them in handcuffs because of it?”

Terry didn’t want to admit that he was right.
