Chapter Nineteen: Crash

Buffalo, Wyoming

Monday, December 20, 1976, Two p.m.

Perry

Perry’s mom was standing in the middle of the living room with her hands on her hips and bags at her feet. Her voice was irritated. “Hurry up, Perry! I don’t want to be driving after dark on strange roads.”

He ignored her. He was sitting in the dining room chair closest to the back door, waiting for his chance to make a break for the shed. His mom wasn’t really talking to him anyway. He was packed and ready with his bag by the door downstairs. She was just using him to send a message to get everyone else moving. His mom always said that Mama Cat and Aunt Shelley were born a day late and a dollar short. He wasn’t entirely sure what that meant, except for the late part, which was pretty obvious every time he was around them. They were S-L-O-W. Aunt Shelley was cooing to baby Leslie and feeding her a bottle. Mama Cat had decided to go change clothes. Uncle Will and Papa Fred were having some kind of drinking contest while Papa Fred was working the CB again, this time for a road and weather report.

“No new snow between us and Lander since last night. The roads have been plowed. The low today was a brisk five degrees. But there’s a storm blowing in this evening.” He held up a coffee mug. “Top me off, Kitty Cat?”

Mama Cat turned around from her clothes-changing mission and went back to the kitchen. She picked up one of two thermoses and poured Papa Fred a steamy refill. Uncle Will tipped his mug back and drained it, so she refilled his, too.

“Mama,” Susanne pleaded, now standing at the top of the stairs, an overnight bag on one shoulder and her purse on the other. “Please. We have to get moving.”

“Just a minute, Tootie.”

The childhood nickname for his mom made him giggle. She claimed it was because her sister couldn’t say Susanne when they were little. She’d tried to say Susie instead and it had come out as Tootie. Papa Fred swore it was because Susanne had been a tooty little girl, as in butt toots. Perry giggled again.

“Daddy, do we have a hotel reservation?”

“All set.”

Mama Cat disappeared down the hall again. She and Papa Fred were staying in his parents’ room. Aunt Shelley and Uncle Will had his room, with baby Leslie. His mom was sleeping with Trish for now, but when his dad came home, Trish would be out in the basement playroom with him and Matthew. Trish had been a real turd ever since Brandon dumped her, and he was dreading her sleeping in the same room as him. But it would give him a chance to pay her back for how mean she’d been to him. In the middle of the night there would be no parents around for her to tattle to, either. But revenge was on hold for this crazy trip to the reservation. What was up with his mom, anyway, that she was dragging them across the state? Dad was working.
