Chapter Seventeen

"Actually Grams is—" I stop when I see the door swing open.

Grams walks in, then stops suddenly when she sees the three of us standing there. Her eyes go to Walter, then me, then back to Walter. "What are you doing here?"

He stands up straighter. "Having lunch. Faith invited us."

Grams' eyes shoot to mine, giving me the look she used to give me when I was in trouble as a kid.

"Faith didn't mention you were coming over," Grams says.

"I tried to this morning," I say, "but you raced out of here."

"I assumed you knew," Walter says to Grams. "If you'd prefer not to have company, we can leave."

Grams' eyes move over Walter, looking down at his suit then back up to his face. Is she checking him out? Or just assessing his attire? I'm pretty sure she was checking him out. And I think she likes what she sees. She suddenly seems nervous, her eyes bouncing around, her breaths getting faster.

"It's fine," she says, racing past Walter to the hall closet. She puts her purse in its place on the top shelf. "Continue with your lunch."

Walter walks over to her. "You're not joining us?"

She shuts the closet door. "I don't believe I was invited. I never received an invitation."

"Grams, of course you're invited," I say. "I planned this last week and just forgot to tell you."

"Last week?" Walter glances at Tyler like he just realized this was a setup. I assumed he already knew that but I guess not.

"You remember," Tyler says to Walter, signaling him to go along with it. "I told you last week at dinner. We were eating those frozen pot pies you don't like. You were saying how you couldn't wait to have a homemade meal."

"You shouldn't be eating those frozen meals," Grams says, going around Walter to the living room. "They're not good for you."

"I'm not the best cook," he says, "and I haven't been feeling up to cooking."

"Why is that?" she asks, folding her arms across her waist.

"He hasn't been sleeping well," Tyler blurts out. "So anyway, what time is lunch?"

"In a few minutes," I say, heading to the kitchen. I stop before I get there. "Grams, I'd really like you to join us. I've already set you a place at the table."

She sighs. "Very well, then. I'll go up and change."

"I wish you wouldn't," Walter says. "You look beautiful in that dress."

She blushes, something she rarely does.

"Not that you wouldn't look divine in something else," he says with a sheepish grin.

This is too cute. There's something about watching older people flirt with each other that I find adorable. I wonder if Grams feels the same way when she sees people my age flirting.

"I suppose I could wear this," she says, looking down at her light blue dress with its lacy white collar and white trim around the waist.

"Why don't we have a seat?" Walter asks.

"I'll be in the kitchen finishing lunch," I say, giving Tyler a look.

"I'll help." He follows me in there.
