Chapter Ten
“You okay?” Finn crouched down in front of Ian.
Ian didn’t like to state the obvious—that he was fine but that he was coming down from some weird adrenaline high. He watched the blue lights receding as the ambulance left then glanced back at Finn. His head hurt and he forced himself to concentrate.
Another cop, a skinny guy with a receding hairline, was taping off the area. Ian sat in the middle of a surreal situation. From the utter darkness outside the ring of light thrown by the halogen lamps, to the group of first responders chatting together, it was like something from a TV show.
He felt like a spare part. He’d done his bit, called nine-one-one and guided the paramedics in. There wasn’t really anything else he could do. Ian blanched as he looked down and saw there was blood on his hand. He hadn’t even touched Jamie or Mikey, had he? He must have when he passed the phone to Jamie. He couldn’t remember. That must be the kid’s blood on his hands. Who would do that to a person—beat them so they were bleeding to death and dump them in a park? Who would pour gasoline over someone still alive?
“Ian? Do you need medical assistance before answering the questions?” Finn was asking. He didn’t look pissed. He looked concerned.
Me? I don’t need any assistance. I’m fine. “No, sorry, what did you say?”
“Start from the beginning and let me know what you saw.”
“We heard it first. The noise of someone yelling, it was distant but clear. ‘Fag’, ‘loser’, that kind of thing. Then sounds like crashing and breaking in the bushes. Jamie ran in that direction and I followed. When I got there, I saw the back of someone running from the scene, and I saw Jamie on his knees next to the guy on the ground.”
“Next to Mikey.”
“Yeah. That’s his name… Jamie called him Mikey. Jamie tried to get him to wake up. He couldn’t.” Ian shook his head free of the memories that blurred between Mikey and Jim. He hoped to hell Mikey didn’t die. “There was nothing I could do. Jamie said I should call nine-one-one. I did and I held the phone while Jamie was working on the kid.”
“So where Mikey was lying—is that where you found him?”
“No. I mean, it was close but Jamie pulled him a couple feet from the bushes. There was no light in there.”
“Okay. Can you recall anything about the person who was leaving the scene?” Finn asked. Ian looked directly into his eyes. He wished he had something positive to add.
“Not much. Tall, a guy, I think. I didn’t see what he was wearing, though, or his face or anything remotely helpful. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry,” Finn replied. He stood and extended a hand to help Ian to his feet. Pain in Ian’s thigh made his ascent to standing a little shaky but Finn didn’t let him fall. “Thank you for your help. Go home, grab a shower, I’ll call you if anything changes with Mikey.
