BISPHENOL A (BPA)

Do you drink out of plastic bottles? Do you ever wonder why the plastic bottle is labeled “do not refill?” You need to learn about the toxic effects of BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic molecule used in the manufacture of plastics and in the epoxy resins lining food and beverage containers. It is one of the most produced chemicals in the world. BPA is classified as an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) because it interferes with hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and others.

Most people harbor plastic in their body as evidenced from the detectable BPA metabolites in the urine of 80–90% of the population worldwide. Frighteningly, nine out of ten infants are born with detectable BPA in their body, according to the Environmental Working Group. The main source of exposure is through consumption of packaged food and beverages, with additional exposure from drinking water, shopping receipts, produce bags, personal care products, and inhalation of household dusts. In fact, a study published in JAMA in February 2014 showed BPA from paper receipts is easily absorbed through the skin.149 Cashiers are at high risk for exposure. Aluminum cans contain a BPA lining. Disposable coffee cups are not made from paper alone, as common sense tells you they would leak if they were. The key to the integrity of the cup is often plastic. What do you think hot coffee does to plastic? Shampoos, laundry detergents, soaps, and even vitamin bottles typically contain BPA.

Even products labeled BPA-free are still made from synthetic compounds that get into our bodies. They may have worse possible effects than BPA. This is analogous to a vaccine manufacturer removing mercury from the shot, yet filling it with other chemicals. Pick your poison.
