Chapter FIve
We all gathered around Trey, arranged in front of him in a semi-circle. The pack was restless and because of that, I was too. They were expecting something big. I knew what it was because Trey had told me the night before, but even though it wasn't a surprise to me, I felt just as antsy as the others. I wasn't sure Trey was doing the right thing, but I guessed I’d just have to see what the pack would say.
Thanks for coming out to this meeting, said Trey. It’s important to define new goals for the pack and I have one for us now. As you know, we went on a scouting mission a couple weeks ago to explore the other side of the bridge. I now know that the territory there belongs to a pack called the Broad Street Pack.
He looked around at us, trying to gauge our expressions. The pack was uneasy but they still didn't know what he was going to say next. I wondered how they would take it.
The Broad Street Pack is weaker than ours, I'll say that bluntly, said Trey. I'd like for us to expand our borders.
He waited to see what the response was. For a moment, the pack was quiet while they thought about the implications of what he had said and what it would mean for them. I could hear their chatter as they talked about it amongst themselves. Trey gave them plenty of time to think about it. He had to know exactly what the mood was before he moved on.
It seemed like the dogs were excited. I personally hadn't expected that at all. I thought that they weren't going to like it. How could they like the thought of being drafted and sent into an arbitrary battle? It was foreign to me, but I had to put my feelings aside. It looked like I was a minority in the pack.
As you know, continued Trey, the Broad Street Pack’s most important area is Broad Street itself. I plan to take Broad Street away from its pack.
Again he paused to see what the pack's response was. Because we were all dogs here, it was easy for us to tell what each other’s emotions were simply from smelling and hearing and looking. I could tell right then that the pack did not like this idea.
Expanding our borders was one thing, but dissolving another pack entirely was not so honorable. I saw a couple of dogs glance at me and I saw a few ears swivel in my direction. They were thinking of what had happened to my pack. When you dissolved the pack, you took away the security of its members. It was a risky move.
I know you're not too enthused about this idea, said Trey, but I'm not a tyrant nor do I want to be a dictator. My ultimate goal is to unite all of the packs.
There was a silence. One of the dogs broke it. Excuse me,
