What the hell was that smell? Rian wrinkled his nose. He

squinted as pain swarmed his head. Memories came flooding back as

his eyes popped open. The stench was apparently a dank, dark

basement with cell bars and enough mildew to kill someone slowly.

He sat up with a groan and glanced around.

Dark? Check.

Creepy dripping sound? Check.

Scared enough to piss his pants? Check.

Yep, he was now in a horror movie. He knew that sign was too

good to be true. Heaven, his ass. Rian shuffled to his feet. It seemed

there were two cells, an empty one across from his and a small hall

that led to stairs. That had to be the way out.

Surviving nearly two years of bullshit and now he gets capture

by a bunch of fucking town folk. He growled at himself and carefully

walked to the bars. His head still thumped painfully with every

heartbeat and the floor was slippery with what he hoped was water.

“We do not take kindly to liars.”

Rian knew that voice. He frowned and out from the darkness

came the psycho leader. “Why am I in a cell?” He tried to stay calm

and get a grip on the situation. Rian just needed a little slip and an

advantage. He’d run like the wind and never look back. That’s what

he did best.

“You lied, that is why you’re in there.”

“Lied about what?” Rian played stupid, an ache beginning

above his right eye.

“That Outlaw did not threaten your life…” Clarence trailed off

and remained silent.

Technically, Outlaw did. “The gun was pointed at me. I did

feel my life was in danger.” He pressed closer to the bars. A few more

steps and he could grab this guy.

Clarence grinned, but it was creepiest fucking grin Rian had

ever seen. “That is why you’re here. You lied about his threat. The

reason you’ll be dying soon is because you are an abomination.”

“Whoa, who said anything about dying?” Rian’s chest pressed

against the cold bars, his breath hitching. What the hell was this guy

talking about?

“Did you think no one would see? Did you think we would let

a disgusting addition to the human race remain in our midst? You will

be sacrificed to our all mighty creator.”

“Sacrificed?” Calm fled.

Clarence stepped forward, still inches from Rian’s grasp.

“You kissed Outlaw.”

The room seemed to shrink, the darkness seemed to grow and

Rian hissed out a breath. “You’re a homophobe?” He whispered the

words.

“If you will not repopulate the earth with a female then you

will be sacrificed to our lord,” Clarence said calmly. “Pray, my son,

because soon we will bring you to the volcano and your fate.”

Rian heard the soft footfalls as Clarence left. Sacrifice,

volcano, death, it was all too much for him to wrap his brain around.

He couldn’t die; he didn’t want to die. Maybe they were bluffing.

Where were they going to find a volcano around here anyway? The

closest one was, what, Florida? The last time he checked they didn’t

have boats stashed around the town to get there.

Rian slumped to the ground. The forbidden kiss with Outlaw

had been great but not at the expensive of his life. This must have

been what Martha was afraid of.
