Chapter Eight:
Callum
What do you do when the man you love is deep in conversation with another guy you’ve never met, to the exclusion of everything around him, including you?
If you love the guy and you know he loves you, then you’re okay with it.
I knew I was hiding it well, but I was as nervous as heck being at the Pride parade. It was my first time. I wasn’t newly out of the closet, it was just that I was new to the gay “scene” in Perth.
Before I met Ed, I’d never had anyone to do the gay-friendly things with. My best mates in the world are Justin, Brendan, and Rhys, but we did things together like getting roaring drunk, watching football, and playing basketball. It was Ed who’d convinced the guys to come to the Pride parade—and that was before we were officially an item.
Justin was the weathervane in the group. He set the tone and led us in the right direction. He’d always been smarter than us all. I’d known him since school, and I loved the guy to bits. He was the first I told that I was gay, and the one I could count on to stick up for me. Ed convinced him that the guys needed to make a statement by coming and supporting gay pride, to show that they accepted my “gay side,” or some shit. I didn’t really know. All I knew was that Ed told Justin they needed to come, and Justin agreed—so here they were at the parade.
Brendan’s a great mate too. He’s the one you can always rely on to come and pick you up when your car’s broken down, or he’d remember to ask you if your sick uncle was still holding on. Emotions ran deep with him, and it was only with our group that he felt he could share them.
Rhys was Justin’s little brother, and in the beginning we allowed Rhys to hang around with us because he was amusing. We still hung around with Rhys because he’s amusing. He’s like the kid in the class you have to remind not to pat the lion, and then explain why. He’d always known I was gay, but I didn’t think it really sunk in as to what that entailed. Still, Rhys was harmless. Not a single bit of malice in his body. He just needed us to remind him how to behave every now and then.
I had been surprised when Rhys told us that the boss at his new job was gay. “Travis Epping. Do you know him?” Rhys had asked me.
I’d gritted my teeth and grinned, shaking my head. “Rhys, dude. Just because I’m gay, it doesn’t mean I know every single gay guy in town.”
I think that honestly surprised him, but I took it in my stride. Ed was sure to help him understand why that question was stupid. Since Ed was a teacher, he seemed to have the knack of expressing pertinent information in just two sentences, and in a way that the guys could understand.
