Chapter fourteen

Leon woke up to the smell of death. He was cold and naked on the stone floor. His muscles were failing and it was hard to stand, or even move. His stomach had stopped growling now, which was both good and bad. It was nice that he didn’t have the stabbing hunger pangs and auditory reminders of his lack of food, but he was running out of fat stores, and when his body had nothing left, he would be gone.

“Hey, you… prisoner next to me.” Leon never asked his name, or at least didn’t remember if the man had given it. He waited for a reply and when there was none, he called for him again, this time louder. Still no response. Something inside Leon told him that the man in the cell next to him was dead. Leon let out a deep wheezing cough as he tried to rise. It was almost dinner time and he hoped that the young boy would be delivering today and not one of the red masked men.

Leon tried to look down the hall to see any of the other prisoners. He wanted to get someone’s attention, someone that could check on the guy next to him. He didn’t want to start yelling though, because that would draw the wrong kind of attention.

Leon picked up a small piece of rubble from the stone floor and tossed it down the hallway. He listened to the clacking sound grow quieter as it bounced further down the hall.

Leon was surprised when he heard a stone skipping back toward him, the soft clacking sound reminded Leon of the wooden box that his mother used to have on the piano. She had insisted he learn to play, the box made a ticking sound to the beat of the music. He loved those times with his mother. She was always calm and patient with him as he tried to learn. Even when the result was the eventual conclusion that he did not possess an aptitude or an ear for music.

“Can you see the guy next to me?” Leon whispered loudly down the hall.

“No, he must be in the back of his cell, hey, Brendan, you awake?” He called to the prisoner next to him. When Brendan groaned in response, he continued talking. “Check on Grandpa.”

A few moments of silence followed as Brendan moved to the front of his cell. When he got close to the bars, Leon heard him gag. He wasn’t positive, but he had the feeling, it was because of the smell. Brendan yelled for the man they called “Grandpa” a few times, and when he didn’t move, Brendan confirmed Leon’s suspicion.

“He’s dead- his body looks like it is decomposed and he has some kind of blackness spreading through his body. It looks like roots, or... a plague, we shouldn’t be breathing this in.” Brendan began to panic, and in doing so, woke the other prisoners. Everyone started yelling, trying to attract the attention of the guards upstairs.
