Chapter Forty-Seven
Amber
Thereâs no answer at Davinaâs, which is surprising for this time of the day. Iâm disappointed, as I wanted to report my new information to her immediately and find out if she already knew. I go to the front window, cup my hands either side of my face and peer inside, in case she hasnât heard me knocking. Movement catches my eye: a dark figure shifting quickly to the right. I look back to the front door, which remains stubbornly closed.
I wonder if it was Wayne, but dismiss this possibility as surely heâd have answered the door. Which leaves me to conclude itâs Davina, and sheâs avoiding me. I turn sharply and walk away. This must be how Davina felt all the months I did this to her. Karma. What have I done to warrant this, though?
I try not to let Davinaâs blatant avoidance tactics play on my mind, busying myself with helping Finley with his spellings, cooking tea and then getting him and a very reluctant Leo ready for bed. Finally, at eight oâclock, I collapse on the sofa with a glass of wine to unwind. Nick will be here any minute, so I must only have the one. I donât want to be tipsy and say stupid things to him that Iâll regret in the morning.
A loud knocking wakes me. I canât believe I drifted off. Itâs nine-fifteen; Nick mustâve worked even later than he thought he would.
When I open the door, Nick is standing there, a concerned look on his face.
âWhat happened here?â he asks, his fingers manipulating the broken plastic of the doorbell.
âIt seems someone didnât like being watched?â I say.
âThis was done on purpose?â
âYep, Iâm guessing so.â I usher him inside. âWhile I was in as well. I heard a noise, but by the time I realised where it had come from, it was too late. No one to be seen.â I feel groggy after napping; I rub my eyes.
âNone of the neighbours saw anything?â
âNot even Davina,â I say.
âWell, now that is odd. Iâll sort a new one for you. Iâll get a decent one, and subscribe for you so you can record, too.â
Iâm so grateful I almost kiss him.
Remember why you split, Amber.
âThank you, but you donât need to do that.â
âI do, actually. Iâd feel better knowing you feel safer with it.â
I smile. âHot chocolate?â
âYes, that would be good â itâs freezing out there and Iâve been sitting in a car watching a house for the best part of twenty-four hours.â He rubs his hands together as though to prove heâs cold, but his glowing cheeks are already testament to this.
âReally? Thatâs not usually something youâd do, is it?â
âAs I said last time I was here, this case has really got to me. Iâm probably what youâd refer to as obsessed â¦â
It was what Iâd often said to Nick. Heâd lose himself in the job and everything became about his current case. Life revolved around it. Me and the boys barely existed in his mind.
