“HOMEY,” Cal muttered, crossing the muddy yard. He said the word as if it was an evil adjective out to destroy the ranch. He spit in the dirt and kept moving toward the bunkhouse. “Homey, my ass.”

“What are you mutterin’ about?” Rob called from . the porch. “Your face is gonna set in stone like that and you’ll scare the girlies.”

“Damn fool nephew of mine bought himself some new furniture.”

The cowboy’s expression brightened. “That mean we get the old stuff?”

Calvin shrugged, and pushed the door open. He sat down in the empty chair, stretched his legs out in front of him and adjusted his hearing aid. It had been a long drive to town, but he and Cussy had eaten their fill of chicken-fried steak at that big diner outside of Cheyenne. That, and the mashed potatoes, had been worth the trip. “He’s ‘decoratin’.‘ And Miss Allison is helping him.”

“Well, that’s nice. They’d make a right nice couple.”

The older man snorted. “She’s a beauty, all right, and he’s, well, he’s a good man—”

“Finer man never lived,” Rob agreed solemnly.

“But he’s not much for looks, and he doesn’t know nothing about women and he’s going to get his heart broken.”

Rob frowned. “I heard in town that she was, well, his girlfriend.”

“She ain’t. And that’s the problem.”

“She leavin?”

“Yep. When that silly car of hers gets fixed.”

“The boss is sure nicer these days.”

“You wait,” Cal said ominously. “When she leaves, there’ll be hell to pay around here. He’ll be like a grizzly with a bullet in his thigh, and there won’t be no pleasin’ him. She’s gonna decorate his house and break his heart and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it.”

“You could,” the younger man said. “He listens to you about lots of things.”

“Not about women,” he muttered. “Not about this woman he’s not listening.”

“Maybe she’ll stay. Become the missus. Then the boss would be in a good mood all the time.”

Cal shook his head. “Nope. I got a bad feelin’.” The other cowboy was silent. Cal’s bad feelings were legendary, and to be respected. “I gotta do some thinkin’,” the old man declared. “Before all hell breaks loose.”
