“DID you tell your parents you’re in the city?” Caleb asked, making sure to keep his voice even, not wanting Andrew to think he was implying either answer would be wrong. He knew his effort to keep the question light and casual failed when he saw Andrew’s back stiffen.
“No, I just wanted a few days to relax.” Andrew was no longer spooning food from the frying pan onto his plate, but he didn’t move to sit at the table either. He just stood at the counter with his back to Caleb, his head bowed, and his hands clenched.
Caleb pushed his chair back, flinching at the high-pitched scraping sound the metal legs made against the brick floor. If Andrew wanted to see his parents, Caleb would drive to Somerset with him. If he didn’t, no big deal. He walked over to the counter, picked the abandoned plate up with one hand, and gripped Andrew’s elbow with the other.
“’Course you do. You’ve been working like a dog, finishing your residency, getting ready to start your fellowship, packing, moving. You’re overdue for some serious R and R.” He put the plate on the table, pulled Andrew’s chair out for him, and waited for Andrew to sit down.
Once Andrew sat, his face was eye level with Caleb’s groin. Low-rise boxer-briefs with stripes in alternating light and dark shades of green clung to a fit body. “Damn, Cae, your package looks amazing in those underwear.”
“It isn’t just the underwear,” Caleb answered in an intentionally campy tone.
Andrew laughed, then rubbed his cheek against the smooth Lycra fabric. It seemed as if he was about to peel the underwear off and taste what Caleb barely had hidden underneath, when he froze, likely remembering their topic of conversation. Nothing like thinking of his parents to kill Andrew’s mood.
Picking up on Andrew’s anxiety, Caleb softly stroked his cheek and kissed the top of his head before sitting back down. They ate in silence, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Caleb propped his bare foot on Andrew’s chair and caressed Andrew’s thigh with his arch. The connection felt good.
“This tofu scramble is delish,” Andrew said as he smiled weakly at Caleb. “Thanks for putting green chili in it. I love spicy food in the morning.”
“I know,” Caleb replied.
Andrew squeezed his foot and gave him a smile, a real one this time. “Yeah, you do.” The deep sigh signaled a coming shift in the conversation away from food and back to family. Caleb didn’t say anything, just ate his breakfast and waited for Andrew to get it off his chest.
“All these years, I thought she should leave him. I’ve called him every name in the book for his lying and cheating.” Andrew paused, looked down at his plate, and then raised his eyes, blinking them rapidly. “Is it weird now that she’s finally done it that I wonder if maybe it was a mistake?”
“Why a mistake? Do you think it wasn’t true? That he’d really stopped sleeping around?”
“No way.” Andrew shook his head. “My dad isn’t capable of keeping it in his pants.
