Don’t overeat, then dash off to the gym to burn off the calories and guilt. Eat just what your body needs, so “burning it off” happens naturally. No gym

An important part of the 1:1:1 plan is trust. You’re trusting your own body to balance and heal as you begin to feed it in a healthier way. It’s an exciting, free-spirited way to “diet,” which is exactly why it works. You can always have the cheeseburger, the pizza, the cookie. You can always skip the salad. But aim for making the healthy choice most of the time, and you may find yourself ordering that salad after all.

Q A lot of diets tell you to give up coffee. I would never give up coffee. Can I have coffee on the 1:1:1 plan?

AOf course. You can have anything you want on the 1:1:1 plan, as long as it’s in balance, and I would never take your beloved cup of coffee away from you if you really want it. However, while coffee isn’t going to kill you or make you fat, it’s not a great idea to drink too much of it. While coffee has antioxidants, the additives like cream and sugar and flavored syrup and whipped cream can add too many calories and too much sugar and fat to your diet, and even the effects of too much black coffee may be harmful. A Duke University study demonstrated that coffee consumption can actually hinder the body’s ability to regulate insulin and glucose levels in the blood in those with type-2 diabetes. Insulin and blood sugar are closely related to your appetite, and drinking anything that messes with that system isn’t a good idea, as far as I’m concerned.

Tea is full of healthful antioxidants, so why not swap your second cup of coffee for a cup of black or green tea? Tea has caffeine, too, but not as much, so it may help you “step down” a caffeine addiction. If you need more comforting beverages, then switch to herbal tea or an unsweetened plain or flavored iced tea. There are so many yummy flavors of herbal tea that hydrate you without jolting your body with caffeine. These teas can even stand in for dessert. Try apple cinnamon, orange spice, peppermint, chamomile, or even vanilla or chocolate tea instead of a nighttime snack.

In the meantime, if a cup of joe gets you going in the morning, then go for it. You can even add cream and a teaspoon of sugar, since you’re just having the one cup (on 1:1:1, I consider these parts of the coffee). For that matter, you can even have your fancy mocha latte or caramel macchiato—just recognize that if you have one of these large, fancy coffee drinks, you may have a complete 1:1:1 snack covered: milk is a protein, whipped cream is a fat, and sugar is a carb. (So skip the giant muffin!)

Q So, 1:1:1. I get it. Everything in my meal should be 1:1:1. So I can have
