Chapter One

“What’s wrong with Chloe?”

James whirled around to look where his father was pointing. He caught sight of Chloe as she threw open the door and raced into the night. The image of Cinderella escaping the ball before her carriage could turn into a pumpkin was the first thing that ran through his mind. Seeing Cameron’s smug expression as he strolled back into the room gave him an idea.

“Excuse me, Dad,” James said, barely looking at his father.

He strode to Cameron who stood leaning against the door, one hand in his pocket, the other wrapped around yet another Scotch. As James approached, Chloe’s brother raised his glass in James’s direction, as if in a toast and then drank it down in one go. He had a definite air of victory and James could only think of one thing he could have done.

If that punk had screwed everything up, James wouldn’t rest until he paid and paid dearly.

“What did you do!” James grabbed Cameron by the lapels and slammed him hard against the wall.

“Are you sure you want to air your dirty laundry in front of all these fine people?” Cameron hadn’t stopped smirking and James wanted nothing more than to wipe the floor with the bastard, Chloe’s brother or not.

“Outside.” James didn’t give Cameron a chance to object. He grabbed him and dragged him back into the garden. “Now, talk. What did you do to her?”

“I told her about the deal you made with Daddy,” Cameron said. He spit the last word out as if it might burn him. James wasn’t certain his motives were the purest, but on some level he seemed to actually care about Chloe, misplaced though that care might be. “Once the board hears about it on Monday, he’ll be out and Chloe will be in charge,” Cameron added. “I think she’ll be grateful to me for saving her from being sold, don’t you?” Now the smirk was back.

Any goodwill James had built up toward Cameron died. He was in this for what he could get from his sister that he couldn’t get from his father. James did the only thing he could do under the circumstances.

He decked him.

“You say one word to anyone else and I will take you down so far you’ll never squirm back up. Then I’ll destroy Baxter, even if it means scuttling every ship it has and burning down every hotel. There won’t be a dime left for you to waste.” James wanted to scream, but he kept his voice low and laced with deadly purpose. Cameron lay on the ground in shock.

“You wouldn’t! You can’t get the company without Chloe and she won’t want you now!” Cameron started to get up but James shoved him back down with his foot.
