Chapter 17

Eve woke on Saturday morning satisfied that she had called Louis, inoculated the diabetic mice—poor fellows—and was now going to have a manicure, take care of her hair and makeup pre-Clemson fiftieth anniversary celebration at Martha’s Vineyard. Martha’s. Vineyard. She was a girl from smalltown Mississippi, born to immigrant parents who didn’t understand American plutocrats, their couture or their extravagant lifestyles.

She walked into the salon and was immediately snagged by a man in full makeup who introduced himself as Francis. He had sparkly pink pout, peach-frosted lids, and eyelashes like a Hollywood starlet. He was, Eve thought, very beautiful. He promised her a face and hair to make the moon blush.

“Something to work with!” Francis whistled. “Honey, honey, don’t you worry. Sit back and let Francis work his magic.” Francis plucked at her hair and quickly selected what he promised were the best products. Eve sipped on champagne and nibbled on strawberries while she thumbed through fashion magazines—including a Cosmopolitan cover that touted “tight abs, sexy butts and 10 things he craves in bed.” While one person painted her nails a glossy, classic red, another person shampooed her. Francis swore the red would stun with anything, which worked since her clothing was a mystery. He pulled her hair into a high French twist with long, flouncing tendrils that framed her face and swept over her neck. He spent over an hour on her makeup, lashes and lips, and when he turned her around to face the mirror, her mouth dropped open. She didn’t even recognize the face staring back at her. Her lips were red, her face flawless and sculpted, her lashes a voluminous black. Any doubt she’d had, any cause to be concerned that she might not look the part, faded in that moment. The woman staring back was not the reserved classic persona she’d spent years perfecting. The woman in the mirror was stunning. Gorgeous. Francis had made some big promises, but she would never have guessed he could’ve transformed her like this. Not the kind of face that got lost in a crowd. She looked, and so felt, like a movie star. Her eyes watered with tears, and she hugged Francis’s neck.

“Thank you, Francis. You’ve no idea. Thank you.”

“You are welcome, darling!” He gently took her face in his hands. “You are a vision, but I had some help from mother nature, oui! This hair so platinum, your skin so beautiful! My sweet, you are radiant.”

Eve could feel her face flushing.

“I love, love!” He kissed her forehead. “Your beau is going to love, love!”

My beau. Ha! If he only knew the charade she was playing with her boss, and at Martha’s Vineyard, no less. Nevertheless, she was pleased with her appearance and hoped Will would approve. She gathered her things and headed for the private airport, a little tipsy with champagne and more relaxed than she’d been in a long time.

She pulled into the small lot, parked, and made her way into the concrete building to meet Will.
