CHAPTER FIVE

Every fiber of his being screamed at Liam not to open the door. But he was a prince; someday he would be a king. He knew the full weight of the word duty. So he entered his wife's chambers without a backward glance at his lover, and the door closed silently behind him.

The antechamber was empty, although the torches had been recently lit. The attendants had covered nearly every surface with flowers, and their cloyingly sweet fragrance was enough to give Liam a headache. The door to the bedchamber was propped open; the room was silent as a tomb.

Liam took a deep breath and entered the bedchamber. The torches were dimmer in here, and the curtains drawn. Still, it was light enough for him to see his new wife. She was sitting up, her arms clenched around her chest. Her hair had been released from its ponderous bridal arrangement, and it cascaded down her shoulders to the white sheets wrapped tightly around her body. Her eyes and lips had been painted with a fresh layer of makeup. Liam could smell her fear under the rosewater perfume.

"Hi," he said, realizing they hadn't actually gotten the opportunity to speak to one another. "I'm Liam." He sat down on the edge of the bed and she flinched visibly. "You're very, uh, pretty," Liam said.

Her eyes widened, but she didn't respond. Liam reached for her hand, brushing his fingers across her knuckles, and she flinched again, inhaling sharply. Gods, what exactly am I supposed to do here? I've never felt less aroused in my life.

"May I kiss you?" he asked.

"Of-Of course," she whispered. Her voice shook, and she didn't move.

Liam leaned over her crossed arms and hidden breasts, feeling the hard pebbles of her knuckles against his chest as he met her lips. They were soft and unyielding; she held her breath while he pressed his mouth against hers.

Well, that was terrible. Liam leaned back, watching his bride, wondering what horrible things she'd been told about the wedding night. Wondering what he could possibly do to change her mind.

"I suppose I'll need to undress," Liam said, half to himself.

Analynn did not respond, although her eyes widened as Liam stood and unfastened his cape. He hung it carefully over the end of the bed, then took his time unbuttoning his shirt, his mind spinning frantically. He turned away from his bride as he slipped his slacks over his hips. Then he took a deep breath and sat back down on the bed, feeling as naked and exposed as he'd ever felt in his life. Analynn stared at the wall, avoiding his gaze. For a few moments, they were both silent. Then Analynn sighed deeply and lay back on the bed. She closed her eyes and pulled the sheets off her body.

Liam blinked, staring at her. She wasn't the first naked woman he'd seen, and he could appreciate her beauty, the way her soft curves flowed like water over the white sheets. They just weren't curves he was especially interested in exploring.
