DINNER WAS A VERY MEMORABLE occasion. Little was spoken; we spent most of the evening staring lovingly into each other’s eyes. Occasionally he would place his hand, almost absently, up my skirt to feel my stockings. But, for me, the pressure was off. I had – at last – got my man.

When we returned to his home, we had one last coffee and retired to bed. We were both too tired to make love. But that was of no consequence to us. We both knew where we were in our relationship. There was no need to demonstrate our love, to prove our love, for we knew that it was there, open to the world.

And the following morning, we awoke around seven. We had a light breakfast and got ourselves ready to return to the office. In view of the time we had been truant the previous afternoon, it looked as if we were both going to spend the whole of Sunday at our desks. But that didn’t matter; we were still close, within ten yards of each other.

Geoff drove us back to London; the journey was much shorter than the previous afternoon. We arrived around 8.45, and were the only people in the building.

We went to our respective desks, turned on our PCs and logged in. I began ploughing my way through the files from New York in the process that I had started the previous day.

“Oh my God!” I heard him call from his office. He was seriously agitated. “Oh, shit! This is not happening!”

I got out of my chair and went across to him. “What is it, Geoff?”

“An email from New York. Bad news. The top guys at our chief office had a meeting yesterday morning – Saturday, of course, when nobody’s around – and they’ve decided they want me back there on Wednesday.”

My heart sank. Just when we had finally got things together. “How long for?”

“Hang on, I’m still reading... there’s a lot of words here... O.K., it’s only for a couple of weeks.”

And then he’d be back, presumably. Permanently, I hoped.

“There’s more. Fucking shit! Get this! Sam was brought in on this meeting yesterday – he told me he had a conference call to take from his home, although I didn’t grasp the significance. Listen to this. ‘Sam Weinstein expresses the view that, whilst the standard of services provided by the current legal secretary on loan from Freeman, Harris and Jackson are very satisfactory’ – that’s you – ‘we should approach Freeman’s for another secretary to reinforce the incumbent staff in view of the proposed assignment of Ms. V. Taylor to London next week.’ Holy shit, Jenny!” This is seriously bad news for you, bringing the Taylor bitch over here.”

“Who is she? What is she?”

“Valerie Taylor is one of the legal officers from our office in Philadelphia. She has a reputation as a nasty piece of work. She runs rings round the staff at her office. Nobody likes her. While I’m away, you need to try
