Chapter Twenty-Four

Tonopah, Nevada. Tuesday, November 19th. 2:17 PM.

Johan stared into his father’s unblinking eyes, which stared right back at him. He had no breath in his lungs, no beat in his heart, no blood in his veins. But questions ran across his head like a freight train.

What are the pills? What are the pills? What are the pills? Why had the zombies brought them into the station? Why hadn’t the zombies eaten the prisoners? What were the giant creatures made of dead body parts? Why the pills? What were the pills? Why bring them into the station, set them on the desk, leave them there? Why the pills? What were the pills?

He stared at his father as the thoughts snowballed in his head, creating an avalanche.

Denzel stared back without an answer, his unforgiving eyes no less forgiving in death.

Around Johan, the impossible scene of a strange man and woman—both somehow wielding magic—fighting the giant undead creatures played out. Despite the strangers’ impossible abilities, the six-armed monster and the giant creature controlled the battle.

Johan tore his attention from his father’s dead gaze, shifting it to the orange bottle of light-blue pills.

What are the pills? What are the pills?

They were important. He knew that much. That’s why the zombies had left them there. That’s why the zombies hadn’t eaten him yet.

What if it swallowed a pill? What if it turned him into a super-zombie like the six-armed one, allowing him the ability to fight back, to save his mother? What if it killed him?

Better to die from a pill than as dinner to a zombie, he thought.

Besides, what other options did he have? He could watch the giant creatures kill the two strangers who risked their lives to save them, then wait until they killed Johan and his mother, too.

Or he could risk the pills.

Either they did something, or they didn’t, but he had no other viable paths before him.

With the massive zombies distracted, with the deputy’s embrace around him weakened from complacency, Johan darted forward, breaking free of her grip.

He snatched the bottle of pills off the desk and retreated to his mother.

“What are you doing?” The young deputy spoke in a desperate whisper.

Anita must not have processed anything apart from her husband’s brutal death. She stared at his remains in a paralyzed, broken stupor.

Johan didn’t bother answering the deputy’s question. He twisted the cap off the bottle and shook a single pill into his hand. He stared at the small, blue, oblong drug for a half-second before popping it into his mouth and dry swallowing.

A fire bellowed and burned in his stomach, one he couldn’t control or extinguish. It torched the reverse side of his skin, needed to burst free and breathe fresh air. It threatened to incinerate his insides if he didn’t release it.

Johan screamed and raised his hands, and his body went ice cold as the heat poured out of him.
