I decide to pursue Priscilla. I like her. She intrigues me in a way I don’t have words to describe. I wouldn’t consider myself an eloquent person, so I’m basing this solely on how she made me feel in the short time I’ve spent with her. I’ve never had a date before who fascinated me in conversation, let alone chemistry. I’m all about the numbers. Numbers are safe. They make sense and they don’t change. Priscilla is anything but predictable or safe, and damn it if I don’t want to see what this is all about. A part of me wants to plug everything I know about her into my computer program to see what it says. Would we be compatible? Would we blow the damn thing up with our differences? The idea is intriguing, but another part of me doesn’t want the easy answer because I am afraid it might change my mind about her. For once in my fucking predictable life, I want to be unpredictable.

We can’t keep this a secret for long, and why should we? Considering her brother hates my guts for more than a few reasons, this is going to be tough. The odds are definitely not in my favor. At the very least, I hadn’t done anything stupid like sleep with Maxine, Finn’s girlfriend. My computer program set her up with her, now, ex-fiancé. From my perspective, I was completely not at fault for that one, but I doubt Finn Monroe will see things from that point of view.

Carla was pretty open in her email about her desire to merge her business with mine in some way, hoping we could combine efforts and create… Oh, what did the slightly crazy woman call it?

Oh, yeah. An “Empire of Love”.

I am still shuddering over her terminology, but who am I to argue with, undoubtedly, the best in the business? It isn’t my fault most of America has become “cupid stupid” with all the hype about relationships. Truthfully, I am just a computer programmer who made a little program, the results of which fill my pockets with a ridiculous amount of income and gives me more female companionship than I often desire.

So I do what any confident male would do. I declare war. I call the office, knowing Priscilla will be there. I sit across the street in my car, hoping I can coax her outside for a coffee date or something so we can exchange words and come to an amicable agreement in which she would go out on an actual date with me and let me touch her soft skin again. Pigs might have to fly first, but I am a gambling sort.

I pull out my phone and dial the office number, which Carla Monroe was kind enough to include on her last email. When her brother puts her on the phone, I let my tone drop, “Good morning, princess. I trust you had a nice weekend?” I can almost feel her glare through the phone, crackling with pissed off static.
