Chapter ELEVEN

“You are late.” Aunt Helen walked onto the patio holding a plate, scowling at Yasmine. She put the plate in front of Yasmine and took a step back to inspect her. “Another one that is all skin and bone. Porca miseria.” She shook her head and pointed at Yasmine’s plate. “Eat.”

Without waiting for a reaction, Aunt Helen swung around and walked back into the house, muttering about silly young women not eating enough, too concerned about selfies on ‘Instant Grammy.’

The corners of Yasmine’s eyes crinkled with amusement as she looked from Aunt Helen’s back to Vinnie. “I have so many questions. Firstly, what or who is ‘Instant Grammy’?”

Vinnie snorted a laugh. “I think she does that on purpose. We’ve told her a million times it’s Instagram, but she always gets it wrong.”

“Okay.”

Francine looked at Vinnie, both eyes wide. “Did she really call Jazzy a miserable sow?”

This time, Vinnie laughed out loud. “It’s an Italian expression that you translated directly and correctly, but it’s more often used as a cuss word. Kinda sorta similar to dammit.”

Yasmine picked up the knife and fork resting on the large serving of lasagne. Her eyebrows rose when she took in the amount of food. Aunt Helen had filled the plate to capacity with the lasagne, two bread rolls and a large helping of salad. “Right now, I’m simultaneously a little bit scared and a lot in love with that woman.”

“Then you’d better eat.” Vinnie glanced at the kitchen. “You don’t want her to see you picking at it like an itty-bitty bird.”

“Eat and we’ll bring you up to speed with everything we know so far.” Daniel ignored Manny’s grunt and exasperated expression. “How much did Stefano tell you?”

“He gave me a quick overview and sent me the video and everything else he had. But feel free to start from the beginning and give me all the deets.” She took a bite of the lasagne and closed her eyes. I considered her look of ecstasy to be exaggerated, but the lasagne had been delicious.

Daniel proceeded to tell Yasmine everything, from the reason for us being here to Carlo’s arrest, the artwork in the house, the discovery of the secret room’s art as well as the bombing. I took this time to study Yasmine’s nonverbal cues and it became clear that she’d ceased paying attention the moment Daniel had mentioned the value of the art.

“Wait, stop.” She dabbed at her mouth with a napkin and swallowed, her eyes wide. “Almost four hundred million euros?” She leaned back in her chair. “That’s a shitload of money.”

Daniel nodded. “That’s without the four works of art that are apparently priceless.”

“Okay.” She put her knife and fork down, then rearranged them on the plate. Twice. She pushed the plate away from her, not taking her eyes off the leftover food. “This is possibly the best meal I’ve had in a long time, but I cannot eat another bite.”

I watched her process everything Daniel had told her and waited until she looked up from the plate.
