Outside the sound of traffic had eased, another siren was blaring, and it had begun to rain. Tiny sprinkles of water fell on their faces from the open window as they lay on their backs, taking deep breaths. On the balcony, the rain fell on the remains of their meal, the empty wine bottles, and on the abandoned guitars, forming tiny bubbles.

In the morning they would both be on their way to separate destinations, but Alayna fell into a peaceful sleep for the first time in a long while.

Chapter8

It was with a tear in her eye that Alayna flew over Philadelphia on her way to start the full album launch tour, especially as she had only managed a brief chat with her mother, who Jed had had to wake when Alayna called.

“How is it going, A?” he sounded happy. “It's a shame you couldn't come home like you planned.”

“I'm sorry, but Jackson sprung these college dates on me out of the blue.” She was yawning while she spoke to Jed because of the time zone difference.

“Well, that's how it goes sometimes. Momma's not doing too badly. I know she sounds a little sleepy, but most days she's fine and we're both following what you do on YouTube, can you believe? We seen your pictures in the papers, too. I'm real proud of you, A.”

“This is all you, Jed. I owe you a lot. You taught me so much about the music.”

“No, we did that together. Written any good songs lately?” he asked.

“Without you? Hell no! You know I need my writing partner for that. Listen, soon as this tour is over, I'm coming home. We're gonna write together, play together, hell, we'll even do a gig at Grass Roots for old times’ sake.”

“I'm really looking forward to you coming home, you know that?”

“Listen, I got to go. I'll call y'all soon okay?”

“Only when you can, A. You just go on and do whatever it is you have to do and we're supporting you all the way.”

“Love you guys.”

“Love you, too.”

For some reason she’d found it hard to mention how things stood between her and Lucas. As it turned out, Lucas was still in New York before his own album tour and after returning from the college dates she had one last opportunity to see him before she took off to LA. She was looking forward to it so much that she had to tell herself to calm down. Lucas had been on her mind for the past fortnight and they had only managed the odd text or phone call during all that time. He had told her that they had a song they could potentially record after the session on the balcony. Luckily, the recording device had been saved from the rain, the voice of the man telling them to shut the hell up was there loud and clear, and that she ought to hear it. She told him she couldn't wait.

Although unannounced, Alayna thought that Lucas would not mind her just showing up.
