It’s two weeks into Emma’s treatment, and it’s going as well as can be expected, I guess. A couple of her friends from school have been coming over every few days to see how she’s doing. I’m glad they do, because Emma shouldn’t feel like just because she’s out of school for a while that her social life is over. Whenever her friends visit, though, I dutifully make myself scarce, because there’s only one middle school girl that I’m interested in spending time with.

If there’s any bright point in all of this, it’s that Emma is handling the chemo really well. It does make her sick, pretty much every time, but her hair is still red and thick and as opinionated as she is. The doctor said it wasn’t that unusual, but I feel like it’s a good sign.

Just in case – and supposedly this is a big just in case, I’m being tested for bone marrow compatibility with Emma at the suggestion of her oncologist, Dr. Nadal. I’m not great at picking up the jargon that everyone is using, but I’m okay with oncologist because “cancer doctor” makes me want to throw up. And there’s already enough of that going on in our house.

Anyway, the bone marrow. Because treatment is going fine, it’s not worth it to test Dad, because there’s practically no chance that he’d be a match. Brothers, on the other hand, have a rocking twenty-five percent chance of compatibility. I told them to test away.

I figured they were going to throw me down on a steel table and stick some horrendous needle into my hip or whatever. Which was a scary thought, especially because the doctor said she could do the test right there in the office. But I could never live with myself if there was even a chance that I could help Emma but didn’t.

I already had my shirt off and was unbuckling my belt when she informed me that it was a cheek swab.

Sometimes I jump to dumb conclusions.

We’ll have the test results back in a few days.
