Chapter 8
Sara drove into work on autopilot that morning, arriving before the traffic had a chance to entrap her. She spent the first hour attending to her paperwork as she waited for the rest of the team to show up. Once they were all seated at their desks, she drew their attention and shared the devastating news.
The room fell silent until Jill said, “Poor Carla. Is there anything we can do, boss?”
“At present, all we can do is pray that Gary is going to pull through this and that the doctor’s initial diagnosis is wrong.”
“I’ll get a collection started, if that’s all right?” Jill replied.
“Let’s leave that a few days, Jill. Carla will know we’re all thinking of her. Let’s see what the prognosis is first. Right, I don’t mean to sound cold-hearted, but we have work to do. Two urgent cases to solve, one a murder enquiry, and the other, well, I’m not too sure what we’re dealing with yet, which reminds me, I need to chase up the pathologist, see what she can tell me.” She went on to tell them about the explosion and what she’d gleaned from the preliminary interviews so far. “How are things looking on the Jensen case?”
“We haven’t discovered much at all, boss.” Will shrugged, a downhearted expression on his face.
“Keep your chin up. It’s only a matter of time before some clue comes our way. Carla and I spoke to three of Jensen’s friends yesterday. All of them mentioned his philandering ways. My suspicion is that possibly one of his former bedmates likely killed him when he moved on to pastures new. Proving that is going to be incredibly difficult when no one is supplying us with the names of his conquests.” Sara heaved out a sigh. “I think I’m going to have to rely on the media to help us out there. I’ll chase up the Press Office bods and arrange a conference to take place today, in the hope that some of these women will come forward. It’s a tricky one; I don’t really want the wife to know what we’ve found out yet, not while she and her daughter are grieving.” Sara was reminded of the remnants of the party she and Carla had witnessed at Mie’s house the day after her husband’s murder, still pondering if that type of thing was a tradition to the Danish. “So, we have a lot to be getting on with and we’re one woman down. I’ve cleared my desk for the day; therefore, I can lend a hand with any background checks that need doing on both cases.”
“Would it be worth looking at the CCTV footage for the second incident, boss?” Craig asked, raising his hand like he usually did.
“Yes, why not? The victim owned a mansion. I’ll get the address for you.”
“It’s all right, boss, I have it here.”
“Good. First job for me is to ring the pathologist. I’ll be right back, hopefully with some worthwhile news to get us started.”
“Do you want us all working on both cases, boss?” Barry asked.
