Mae Brunnell waited for Detective Lopez in a booth at the front of Mugshot Diner. Facing away from the door, she gazed through the floor-to-ceiling window that framed one length of the diner. She wished they could have met somewhere more private, but part of her had been surprised the detective was willing to meet with her at all. She pulled the sleeves of her black hoodie sweatshirt up to her elbows and touched her sole piece of jewelry, a bracelet with a heart charm on her right wrist.
Lopez arrived dressed in black pants and a black jacket with a bright yellow blouse under it.
âHi,â Lopez said. âMae, right?â
âMae Brunnell,â said the younger woman, smiling faintly. âThank you so much, again, for your time. Iâm a little nervous.â
Lopez nodded toward the younger womanâs bag: a weathered, heavy green messenger bag with a large yellow CAT label. âNow thatâs vintage hipster.â
She smiled. âGuilty. Can I get you anything?â
âJust a coffee.â
A waitress came over with a coffeepot. âRefill, honey?â she asked before frowning at the full mug. âOh, you havenât touched it.â
âItâs fine. Iâm just taking my time.â
âIâll have a coffee for here and a veggie omelet with no cheese, no home fries, to go,â Lopez said.
âIâm fine with coffee,â Brunnell said.
âAnd a muffin,â Lopez added.
The waitress walked away.
âThey donât like it when you just order coffee,â Lopez said. âTell me how I can help. I have to be at Homicide soon.â
âWell.â Brunnell pushed her shoulder-length hair behind her ears with both hands. âI might be paranoid, but I donât think so.â She shook a bit. Lopez wondered if she shouldnât have brought someone else with her. âYou were so kind to me the other night, and Iâ¦I didnât know who to talk to.â
âAre you going to disclose something Iâm legally obligated to report?â
âI donât trust Eric Ross,â the younger woman blurted out.
Lopez took her coffee from the waitress.
âWhy?â
âYouâve seen Jessie. Sheâsâ¦edgyâand rude. I donât mind working with her,â Brunnell hurried along. âShe knows her stuff, and Iâm learning a lot.â
Lopez had given herself twenty minutes to meet with the forensics intern. She needed to hurry it along or she would be late for the teamâs meeting with Mikovich.
âDo you feel safe?â
âYes.â
âHas Ross done something to make you uncomfortable?â
âMaybe, but not to me.â
Lopez pushed her back into the booth.
âSee something you wish you hadnât?â the detective asked.
âYes.â
âWell what was it? You came to me, remember?â
âJessie follows Ross around,â Brunnell said quickly.
âOnâ¦crime scenes?â
âIn his personal life.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause I saw her. And it was when I saw Ross too.â
âWhat?â
âThe other afternoonâSunday,â Brunnell said slowly, âI was walking my dog, and I saw her out running. Sheâd been really hard on me, and I thought maybe connecting outside of Forensics might help.â
âSo you followed her?â
âYep. To Penn Treaty Park, not far from where we were. And I saw her suddenly stop and stare at something. So I did too. And what she was staring atâit was Detective Ross. He had been running too, I guess, and he had run into somebodyâliterallyâat the park.
