Even though I couldnât sense a ghost in the house I was painting, I was convinced there was one. Iâd seen a couple of ghosts hanging around the building site, some floating around, minding their business, others haunting a builder or two. They all seemed pretty harmless, but it wasn't a big stretch to think one could be doing something in the house when thereâd been accidents on the site, even before Iâd arrived. Eamon had mentioned them when weâd come to check out the sinkhole, and the accidents had started around then. As far as I knew, there hadnât been any recently, but that didnât mean all the First Pit ghosts had gone. Sometimes ghosts just got bored and stopped hanging around for a while.
While I could see the ghosts floating around the site, I couldnât sense their presence. They were too far away. Thatâs what I told myself, anyway. It had nothing to do with my possibly wonky powers.
I took solace in the fact that I couldnât sense anything at the house, either. Maybe I really was being paranoid and there were no ghosts about. I really hoped I was right. Because otherwise, it meant that the few powers I did have were wonky and I had no idea why.
My whole life, Iâd been able to sense the presence of ghosts. So why couldnât I now? What had gone wrong? Sodâs bloody law.
I carried on as normal, convincing myself over and over that there were no ghosts about. Even when my stuff moved an inch this way, or an inch that way, I told myself I was losing it. That was a better option than losing my powers.
Why had I agreed to work on the building site again?
Oh yeah. Money. Bills. Food. Ugh.
After a morning tea break, I returned to the back bedroom to find my paintbrush upright, stirring the paint in the pot. I couldnât see anything or anyone nearby. I couldnât sense a ghost, but I was damn sure there was one.
âAll right, show yourself. Iâm tired of this.â
The paintbrush stopped moving. I waited for the ghost to reveal itself. Would it be a friendly ghost? One from the mines? Someone whoâd want me to help them cross over, Ghost Whisperer-style?
âHello?â I called out.
There was nothing. As far as I could tell, I was alone again.
Sighing, I resumed painting the bedroom. I was almost done with the base coat in there, then I could move on to the next bedroom. I wouldnât get the chance to paint anything interesting â the occupants wanted magnolia throughout â but at least it allowed me to turn my brain off.
Which actually wasnât a good thing, because my brain chose to panic when it didnât have to think about anything. Panic about the house being haunted. Panic about Maggie and Josh. Panic about Ben and Jaya. Panic about Edie. And Fadil. It was a never-ending stream of anxiety going through my head, and I couldnât turn the damn thing off.
Frustrated, I rested my roller on the tray and sat down for a minute.
