“SO WHAT YOU’RE TELLING me is, you had me followed.” Lehigh held the white porcelain coffee mug an inch above the saucer. He’d forgotten whether he’d been picking it up or setting it back down, so he just held it there.

“Essentially.” Samantha Pullen kept her voice low, a habit of hers, it seemed, when she didn’t know who else could be listening. They occupied a corner booth at Shirley’s and had just polished off a quick, greasy dinner and ordered a slice of pie—apple for Lehigh, lemon meringue for his attorney. “Once I heard of Paul van Paten’s release from jail, I figured he’d try to confront you, sooner or later. Following him isn’t quite kosher, but you’re my client. Besides, I couldn’t be sure if he’d show up to mess with you personally or send thugs.”

“It might’ve been nice to let me know,” Lehigh said. “In advance, I mean.”

She winced. “That tends not to work so well.” Their pie arrived, and Lehigh dived right into his. She picked at hers, then set down her fork. “You’ll need a place to stay. Have you patched things up with your parents yet?”

Lehigh spit out a laugh and scooped another huge chunk of warm apple filling and flaky crust onto his fork. “Pappy’d just as soon see me sleep in jail. Hell, I know Maw would.”

“I expected as much, so I reserved a hotel room for you in Twin Falls.”

He swallowed a massive mouthful of warm, sweet apple. “That’s a half hour away. I can’t drive that every day.”

“Why would you?” She nibbled at the puffy white topping of her pie. “You have all your work files with you, plus a cell phone, and your dogs. If you stay in town, there’ll only be more trouble. Up there, you’ll be closer to my office.” She looked right at him. “And I’ll have much better access to you.”

Lehigh’s protests did no good, and he found himself unable to argue with her for long. Nor did he regret giving in, in the end. The hotel turned out to be a standalone cabin at an outdoorsman’s resort, complete with a furnished kitchen, living room, and separate bedroom. The resort’s tiny restaurant served breakfast and dinner on fisherman’s hours—five to eight, a.m. and p.m.—and the room even included internet service. Best of all, they allowed dogs.

“You get to stay,” he told the dogs after brushing his teeth, “but not on the bed.” Moping, Diamond slunk down off the pillowy comforter and curled up with Lucky on a shag throw rug.

Despite the bed’s welcome comfort, Lehigh couldn’t sleep. The arrest, the strange environment, missing Stacy, and worry over what the hell she could possibly be thinking kept him awake until the first hints of gray light peeked through the windows around six a.m. He took a quick shower, dressed, and shaved, even though he had no appointments scheduled. He’d made up his mind—strategy or no strategy, and Constantine Richards be damned, Lehigh had to see Stacy.

He had just finished breakfast when his phone rang.
