Another nutritional strategy is to use turmeric—the spice that makes Indian food yellow—as often as possible. Turmeric has myriad health benefits, one of which is that it is highly anti-inflammatory, largely due to the active ingredients in the spice known as curcuminoids. (You can also take that active ingredient in supplement form. It’s called curcumin and it’s widely available. Two other supplements are also useful for arthritis, and both of them are also without side effects.
Glucosamine is a nutritional supplement that can normalize cartilage metabolism, keeping it from breaking down. It’s now widely accepted even by the conventional medical establishment as being very helpful for arthritis, particularly arthritis of the knee.
Two studies of the many that have been conducted on glucosamine are worth mentioning in particular. In one of them, 212 patients were put on 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine a day, followed for three years, and compared with a control group given a placebo. The researchers measured changes in the space between the joints and found that those taking glucosamine experienced no loss of joint space (while those on the placebo continued to show progressive cartilage loss).9 A second study followed 202 patients on the same 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine per day and compared their progress to a matched group of patients who received a placebo. Once again, researchers saw no joint space narrowing in the patients on glucosamine, and once again, those on the placebo continued to see their joints worsen.10 In addition to these two studies, a systematic review of published randomized trials whose aim was to determine the effectiveness of glucosamine in OA found that each one of the included studies demonstrated a positive effect.11
