CHAPTER NINETEEN

Oliver Davenport was in the kitchen making supper when Cressida got home from Richington University. She had been working long hours preparing for the new intake of freshers due at the end of the month. He didn’t know if she was still profiling for the police. She hadn’t mentioned it for a while. Oliver was able to work from home two or three days a week, so on those days, he liked to cook for her.

She looked tired and pale when she came into the kitchen. Still wearing her jacket and outdoor shoes, she sat down on the nearest chair. He stopped chopping carrots and poured her a glass of wine, sensing something was wrong. She normally gave him a kiss when she got home.

‘Oliver, I have something to tell you. Promise me you won’t be upset.’

Now he was really worried. ‘What is it, my darling? Tell me.’ He sat beside her and held her hand.

‘I’m going into hospital tomorrow. I have to have surgery.’

‘Oh, Cressida, my darling. Has it come to that? I’m so sorry. Will you have to lose everything?’

‘Yep.’ She took a deep swallow of her wine. ‘The whole lot — uterus, cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes. My complete set of reproductive tripes. So that makes it final, doesn’t it, Olly? The end of the road. No chance of your becoming a father now. Not with me, anyway.’

‘Darling, that doesn’t matter to me. Your health is far more important. We’ve known for a while that there was little chance of you being able to carry a child to term, even if you did get pregnant. This just draws a line under it, so we can move on and get you strong again.’

‘It means we can’t run the marathon as soon as we planned.’

‘Yes, and all our classes must stop, until you’re completely recovered. You’ve been really punishing your body lately, my darling — kickboxing, Muay Thai, Aikido, and the weight training will definitely be out of bounds.’

‘Oliver, please don’t keep telling me what I can’t do. You make me sound like a total fitness freak. We’ve tried to counterbalance our mainly sedentary lifestyles with plenty of exercise, that’s all. And I’ll get back to it as soon as I can. It doesn’t mean that you have to stop, though.’ She stood up and refilled her glass. ‘I’m going to have a bath.’

‘All right, my darling. Dinner in half an hour.’

She left Oliver deep in thought. Cressida, the love of his life, was hurting right now. He didn’t know how to help her, whether he even could. She was a professor of psychology, so she knew only too well how such life events could impact on someone’s state of mind. All he could do was support her, and he vowed to do that with whatever action was necessary.

The news that Professor Davenport was in hospital having a hysterectomy travelled fast. PC Jackson got the information from some old chums at the university. He told Inspector Dawes and Jack told Corrie.
