Cole rubbed the towel over his head, tossed it on the end of his bed and then tightened the sash of his bathrobe as he headed for the closet. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his grandmother heading down the hall toward her own room. “Hi, Grams,” he called. “What are your plans for the evening?”She came back to stand in his doorway and answer, “I’m going to a nine-pin tap tournament at the bowling alley.”

He froze, his suit halfway out of the closet. “Excuse me?” he asked, turning his head to look at her.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake, I’m not bowling,” she assured him, laughing. “I’m going for the front-row seat to watch Edgar Moore bowl.”

“Is he that good?” he asked as he resumed his routine.

“I have no idea. But I do know that he’s the only man over sixty in town who’s still packing a fanny in his pants. The rest of them are as flat as boards back there.”

“Grams!”

“Oh, he’s married to Edith,” she said with a dismissive flutter of her elegant hand. “And besides, that whole ear hair thing of his…” She shuddered and then smiled to add, “I may be old, Cole, but I am a long way from desperate. And there are certainly limits to my selective blindness. Do you need me to press your shirt?”

“It should be fine, Grams,” he assured her as he laid his clothing on the bed. “But thanks for offering.”

“I’m so glad that you and Emily have resolved your differences. You two look very cute together, you know. I hope you have a wonderful evening out. I’ll leave the light on for you, but I hope you don’t feel an obligation to be in by any certain time. I’m not going to wait up for you.”

Well, as blessings went, that was as good as roundabout ones came. “Thanks, Grams,” he called after her.

It was nice to know that his grandmother approved of—

Part of his brain running ninety to nothing and the other part of it sitting at a dead, totally numbed stop, Cole dropped down on the side of the bed. How could he have…Damn, she was…Of all the…Not that he had…Maybe it really…

He pressed his hands into the sides of his head and squeezed, desperately trying to get his thoughts to slow down just enough to actually finish one. With a deep breath, he got to his feet.

He began to pace his bedroom, sorting the random stream of his thoughts into neat little mental categories. And when the last of them had been grasped and organized, he sat back down on the bed and logically went through them, analyzing each in turn.

Why was he in a bedroom at his grandmother’s house in a town that wasn’t anything more than a bump in the road? Because he’d been so alarmed at Grams’s request to liquidate part of her portfolio to fund a new friend’s community project that he’d slammed the brakes on his own life, jumped in the car and driven here to put things right.
