She hopped a big, brave hop down to the floor and started to sniff her way around.

She was just nibbling an old boot when a creaking roar shook the air. Humbug shot behind a box and hid there shivering as the huge metal garage door swung up.

Chapter 5

Outside!

“Now, where’s the ladder…? Oh, there!” Mum said.

Humbug watched Mum carry the ladder outside through the open garage door.

She could smell the breeze blowing in, and it was fresh and sweet. It smelled much nicer out there than in the dusty garage.

As Mum walked away round the corner of the house, Humbug crept over to the doorway and peered outside.
