Chapter Eight

To Lucy’s infinite relief, she woke to find that Nick had left for work, and Tamika, Kyro and the twins were still fast asleep.

Skulking into her bedroom like a thief afraid of being caught, she quickly showered and dressed. Then, since she could hear stirring in the other room, she decided that she wouldn’t try to return the clothes she’d borrowed. Instead, she hung them in the back of the closet behind her own things.

After checking on the girls, she wandered over to the corner of the kitchen that she’d staked out as her work space.

Knowing she couldn’t put off the task any longer, Lucy began to riffle through the papers the hospital social worker had provided on the numerous adoption agencies in the area.

She knew she should already have found a family for the girls. At the very least, she should’ve chosen an agency.

But as she stared at the list, she couldn’t bring herself to pick up the phone. Calling one of the adoption facilitators would make things so…formal. So final.

Lucy sighed. It didn’t matter that time was working against her and that preparations needed to be made. Her life had begun to revolve around the girls so much that she couldn’t imagine their being gone.

Lucy shoved the papers back into their file folders. Not today. She would wait a little longer—at least until she knew when the surgery would be performed. An agency would probably need that information, anyway.

But as she escaped to the nursery, she couldn’t ignore the dread she felt waiting for the moment when she could no longer delay the inevitable.

IN THE DAYS that followed, Lucy concentrated on settling into a routine. In the morning, she helped with the girls’ feeding. Then she made her way to the university to give two lectures and once she was finished there, she stopped by the convalescent home to see her mother. Lillian was beginning to respond to the new medication and Lucy’s regular visits. She’d begun to take walks in the garden and socialize with the other residents. And when Lucy arrived, she was eager for a long chat and a report of Lucy’s day. By late afternoon, Lucy returned for hospital appointments, naptime and to play with the girls.

And yet…the twins weren’t the only focus of her attention. She found herself wondering when Nick would arrive home, what they would talk about during dinner and whether or not he would join her for laps in the pool as had become their ritual since the night they’d slept in his bed.

Lucy knew she was treading on dangerous ground. She had sworn to herself that she wouldn’t rely on him in anything but a professional capacity. She’d told herself again and again that the relationship they’d shared was over and she didn’t have the right—or the energy—to feel anything else for Nick.

But he only had to step into the room for her pulse to quicken. And when he joined her at the pool, his body sculpted like an athlete’s, she grew hot all over.
