And it’s something of a love letter to L.A.?

RK: It is a love letter to L.A. A really, really, nasty one.

Are you prepared for the inevitability that many of your fans will be disappointed by whatever you follow up Darko with, even if Southland turns out great? How much of that is on your mind?

RK: None of it. I know I’m not a one-trick pony. I know I have a lot more in me than Darko. I know that’s only the beginning of what I’m capable of doing. There might be people who never like one of my other films more than Darko, but there’s not a thing I can do about that. I wish that I could have gotten another film out already, but all the stuff I’d written after Darko was in anticipation of Darko being well received and an immediate success and me thinking, “Oh, OK, I can then get $15 million for my next film.” In fact it poured molasses on my feet. The slow reception of this movie made it a lot harder for me to get the next project off the ground, because they’re just as messed up and weird and provocative as Darko and, unfortunately, they’re more expensive. The slow-burn success of Darko slowed down my career, but it’s just made me a better filmmaker and it’ll make the second film that much better. I’ve had the chance to really direct it in my mind, and I think the time will have been put to good use.

THE DIRECTOR’S TAKE RICHARD KELLY

What is the first film you ever saw?

I don’t remember.
