Chapter Seven

“Honey, if you’ve e-mailed him and text messaged him and spoken to his room-mate and left two messages on his voice mail, then you just have to wait until he has a chance to call,” Sierra said into the phone as Ty entered his living room on Thursday evening, her dark eyes serious. She listened for a moment and he saw her front teeth scrape across her full lower lip.

She had to be speaking to one of her sisters again. Angie, apparently, since they were covering pretty much the same ground as they had when he’d overheard a part of their conversation on Tuesday night. Ty could summarize it in three words after overhearing just eight seconds of speech.

Todd hadn’t called.

He put down a briefcase full of spreadsheet print-outs and contemplated his future. His immediate future, to be more specific. Shower, eat, drink or talk to Sierra? His body felt sticky with fatigue, his stomach was like an empty cave since he’d only managed to grab a muffin and coffee at Tides for lunch, he was thirsty—water or beer, he’d take either—and he knew he’d left his wife too much to her own devices today.

It was past eight in the evening, and after taking out a morning charter cruise because Matt was off sick, and conducting a scheduled two-hour sailing class this afternoon, he was way behind with administrative stuff and later in getting home than he’d intended.

Almost hidden behind the stacks of papers on his desk at the main office, he’d snatched a moment to call the hospital at around four to check once again on yesterday’s heart attack guy, who was resting comfortably, he was told, and would be discharged tomorrow. He would need routine by-pass surgery in his home town soon. Ty had also called Sierra, here at the house, but she hadn’t picked up so he’d just left a message warning her he wouldn’t be home until around seven.

An optimistic prediction, as it had turned out.

Apparently she wasn’t angry about it, however. She waved at him and managed to smile even while she also kept nodding and listening and making those supportive “mm” noises, then said into the phone, “Angie, wait until you hear what he has to say, and stay calm about it or you will sound needy, okay?”

Deciding on a glass of water, followed by a shower, Ty went into the kitchen and discovered that she’d cooked. He probably would have smelled the delectable aroma escaping the oven as soon as he’d entered the house, except that Sierra had his deck doors wide open again and the fresh salt breeze coming across the dunes overpowered everything else.

Peering through the oven’s glass front, he saw something creamy steaming away in a round casserole dish, and identified chunks of chicken and mushroom and vegetable. Another casserole dish held a fluffy heap of white rice, set in the oven to keep warm, and his stomach flipped and growled at the very thought of piling the food on his plate.
