Chapter 10
Whatâs worse than going on your first mission with two strangers? Possibly Nothing.
Clara
When I got to ANW, my mom parked near a large oak tree and hid the car under a tarp. We walked into a secret door that was cut into the leaderâs tent to get to the middle of ANW grounds. My mom greeted the group of women she works with. Their codenames are Ringer, Lab, and Dollface.
They all wore the same black-lace, spiderweb-covered dress. Each one had a different symbol on the right side of the dress. Ringer wore a bell, Lab wore a puppy, and Dollface had a dollâs head. Their codenames match their powers perfectly.
Ringer is Black and has a large afro. She also has a very big heart. She has the power to amplify sound. Ringer joined ANW when she was five, just like me. She is a very good friend of my momâs, and one of the people I really trust. I know her identity. Itâs Ringer in ANW, and Seana Dymaod when weâre in public. She is in charge of amplifying the announcements at ANW.
Lab, or Marlena Fase, can do everything a dog does, except turn into one. Marlena met my mom in Hawaii when they were on vacation as kids. Later, when they were around fifteen, my mom wanted Marlena to join ANW. My grandma made a special card for her so she could come and go from Hawaii to California. My mom said that when Lab got her powers, they malfunctioned, so she had all the characteristics of a dog. One of her powers is the infamous forcefield she can create, like a dog protecting a herd of sheep.
Dollface, on the other hand, doesnât share her name with me, only my mom. Iâm fine with that. Sheâs more than just a pretty face. Even though she has the pretty blond hair and blue eyes, donât let that fool you. She is a genius. She was once in a Miss Diamond pageant, where she was a victim of a manipulative contestant. The contestant wanted to get rid of her, who was the reigning champion. Before my mom dealt with the threat, Dollface finished the job. By the time the police and my mom (who was undercover) showed up, Dollface had the contestant strapped to a chair. Even today I have no idea what she did that was so scary that made the contestant beg for the police to show up. My mom invited her to join ANW, and she agreed. She was also one of the few assassins who requested not to have any powers, and she doesnât need any. My mom told me she has a black belt in karate and had been a boxer as a teenager. I wouldnât be surprised if she was a neurosurgeon or a scientist who finds a cure for cancer in the real world.
The three ladies smiled at me. It was only fair that they knew I was Poppyâs daughter, since they were among the few who knew my momâs identity.
