Chapter Forty-Six

Miami Zoo Radiology Center – Miami

The Golem was housed in a purpose-built cradle.

Made with high-grade steel, it had a strong skeletal frame, its contours mirroring the Golem's massive, irregular form. Each segment of the cradle was reinforced to provide ample support, ensuring that the Golem's stone-like body was held securely without any risk of movement during transport.

At the top of the cradle, a sturdy, integrated hook was welded into place, designed for compatibility with the forklift's lifting mechanism. This hook was a critical component, as it allowed the entire cradle, with the Golem inside, to be lifted and maneuvered with stability and ease. The hook itself was a hefty piece of metal, engineered to withstand the significant weight of the Golem and its cradle, ensuring a secure attachment to the forklift.

Amira watched as the forklift operator – whose usual cargo included unconscious elephants and rhinoceroses – lined up the machine so that its arms aligned perfectly with the cradle’s hook. With the Golem safely encased, the forklift gently hoisted the entire assembly.

She and Chantelle, the radiographer, and four orderlies followed along, with Genevieve covering the slow-moving forklift like a security guard protecting an armored Cash In Transit truck on its way to the bank.

The forklift moved down the ramp from the radiology department to the loading dock, where the Navistar International CXT was still reverse parked, with its 8-foot-long cargo bed lined up with the secure loading bay. Up ahead, the massive roller doors were down, maintaining security and privacy of the entire loading dock.

The forklift operator didn’t slow down. Adjusting the height of the cradle, the operator guided the Golem onto the back of the over-sized pickup. The cradle was placed gently onto the bed, the chains and heavy-duty straps waiting to secure it in place. The Golem’s stone surface was etched with ancient runes and symbols that glowed faintly under the sunlight. In its motionless state, seemed almost at peace too.

Once the cradle was positioned on the cargo bed, the team of orderlies moved in to secure it. They worked methodically, tightening the high-strength Dyneema straps around the cradle, ensuring that the Golem would remain immovable throughout the journey.

Genevieve glanced at their handywork, then gestured to Amira, “Climb in the truck. I’ll feel better when we’re on the road.”

“Yeah, let’s go,” Amira agreed.

She glanced up at the formidable cabin of the black, Navistar International CXT. It was a colossal vehicle that towered above everything in its vicinity. With its glossy black paint shimmering under the sun, the truck's rugged and broad design was a sight to behold. Measuring approximately 22 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and standing at an impressive 9 feet tall, the CXT was more akin to a moving fortress than a mere truck. Its massive tires and elevated cabin offered an unparalleled view of the road, while the large, chrome-laden front grille proudly displayed the Navistar insignia.

With a determined stride, Amira climbed up into the vehicle. The CXT's high ground clearance was
