NEITHER ERIC NOR FAITH WAS HUNGRY, BUT PATRICK was, so they bought the boy a “dinosaur burger,” which turned out to be a very large, remarkably good hamburger, from the grill at Kenton Mercantile. The store was equal parts grocery, video rental shop, tourist gift shop, lunch counter, and general gathering place.
Ten minutes later they were back in the rickety Suburban. In less than an hour it was parked on the grass at the Boise City airport again. While they were in Kenton, another small plane had come in and was tied down on the ramp. Otherwise the airport was as still as ever, no signs of life anywhere.
After Patrick had climbed into the Arrow and fastened his belt, Eric took Faith’s arm before she put her foot on the step up to the wing.
“Tell me one thing,” he said.
Faith stared at him warily.
“Tell me the truth.” He tapped the sack of folders she held. “Did you know about this? Did you know all these babies were alive?”
“No,” she finally said after a long moment.
Eric didn’t let go of her arm. “But you know who C.B. is.”
Faith didn’t answer.
“You do,” Eric said. “I saw it on your face back there in the kitchen.”
“Is that a question or a statement?”
“You tell me.”
Faith shook her head and broke eye contact. “Let’s go. I need to get back to the city, and I need to make some phone calls.”
Eric squeezed her arm harder. “You know who it is.”
Faith set the bundle of files down on the airplane wing and, one by one pried Eric’s fingers off her arm. He didn’t resist. “Yes, I do,” she said.
“Then tell me-”
“This is so complicated that I don’t even know how complicated it is.”
Eric stared at her for a long moment, then climbed past her and settled into the pilot’s seat. Faith gathered up the files, ducked her head, and crawled in, pulling the door closed and latching it after her.
“Good job,” Eric said. “Now let’s get out of here.” He looked sideways at her. “You understand that up until a couple of weeks ago, I had certain assumptions about my life that I figured were true. Then Colleen told me that story, and-”
“Let’s go,” Faith said.
Eric nodded.
They were in the air shortly, Patrick scrutinizing his road atlas, carefully studying a map of Massachusetts. Faith began to leaf through the files again, looking at dates, at names, and at nineteen sets of twins.
Released to C.B.
Charles Brandon.
Nathan Grant.
She glanced at Eric. Why hadn’t he and his twin been “released” to Brandon like the others? They were the last ones-at least it seemed Winter had told her the truth about that. But what difference did that make, Eric and Edward Miles being the last twins born under Brandon’s “scheme”?
Too many questions. Her life was nothing but questions. A minute later the airplane’s engine sputtered and died.
“Hello?” Eric said.
“What happened?” Faith said, sitting bolt upright. She instinctively looked back at Patrick.
The boy was staring ahead. He caught Faith’s eye and signed, What?
I don’t know, she signed back.
