Chapter Thirteen
Retrieval
Dullahan’s blade was on a path that would have separated Oscar’s head from his body, but just at the last possible instant the blade was halted just inches from its intended target. Dullahan’s face would have shown surprise—if he had a face.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Conchar screamed. His arm was outstretched and his expression showed just how irate he was.
“What is the meaning of this?” Dullahan demanded.
“Fool!” Conchar admonished the demon as he closed the distance between them. “You have no idea what you would have done if you had killed this man.”
“What are you talking about?”
Conchar laughed. “Apparently you’re not as important to Lord Elathan as I thought you were.” Dullahan stiffened his posture and gripped his ax more tightly. “Relax, demon, and meet Oscar O’Neal.”
“What’s an O’Neal doing here?” Dullahan huffed.
“He is our Seeker, fool,” Conchar laughed. “Can you grasp the brilliance of Elathan’s plan, Dullahan?”
Dullahan observed the human, but didn’t see what was so brilliant about the idea of a sworn enemy of Elathan being a Seeker.
“Apparently you know very little about the god you have sworn an oath to, Dullahan. Elathan is a vengeful god that seeks to not only defeat everything Nuada stood for, but to do it in a way that crushes the benevolent god in every way.”
“Oh,” Dullahan said. “He is making the very family that Nuada chose to protect the Earth bring about its destruction.”
“I have shadowed him and his family for over a year, and thus far Oscar has collected two stone coffers,” Conchar turned to face the demon. “Only one coffer remains.”
…
Oscar was lost in his own mind. He was absolutely unaware of where he was or if he was awake or dreaming. All he knew was that there was a voice mixed in his consciousness giving him little words of encouragement.
“You need to find the third coffer, Oscar,” the voice said. “I know you can find it.”
“The coffer… find the coffer,” Oscar mumbled.
But where was it? These things weren’t easy to find after all. The shadow man had led him to the first two, but apparently he was on his own for the third. He wanted to find it. He really needed to find it, but where should he look?
…
Isobel entered the building licking her lips. She had just torn the soul from some poor homeless woman who happened to be of Irish descent. It wasn’t that a Banshee had to eat Irish souls, but Isobel always found them to be the most satisfying.
“Dullahan,” she said, walking into the room. “So Lord Elathan has brought you along on our journey. He really didn’t need to, you know. He does have the Three Sisters of Death on his side!”
“Ha! You Banshees are worthless!” Dullahan accused. “Try not to step too near any coffers.”
Isobel began to growl and Conchar could see that the two of them were about to fight, but that would not do. “Enough!” he shouted.
“Quiet yourself, Conchar,” shot Isobel, her eyes already turned to a pool of white.
