Chapter TWELVE

This suburb was closer to the city centre, the houses obviously much older than the more modern area we’d just come from, but just as affluent. In contrast, numerous drab apartment buildings were juxtaposed with stunning old homes with lush gardens.

We turned into another small street, Colin following the navigation system. Kamila had been on the phone since we’d entered the car. I’d taken that time to think about everything Maggie had revealed about the professor. And about herself.

She’d endured many emotional challenges in the last two years, yet her inner strength shone through when she’d talked about her deep concern for her husband.

When we’d left, she stood on the porch, her arms wrapped around her torso. I was glad when Kamila had organised a patrol car to stay in front of the house. I didn’t know enough about Professor Grzegorz Mondzelewski to be confident he wouldn’t harm his own family. Nor was I entirely convinced that he was Mondi, even though the growing circumstantial evidence made it nigh on impossible to refute.

Kamila ended her current call and cleared her throat. “The house is on the left. I think it’s that one with the ivy growing on the wall.”

It was the house next to it. We parked on the street and got out. Wiktor parked behind us. Novak jumped out as soon as the SUV stopped and took a large case out of the boot. Colin walked to them and chatted with Wiktor and Vinnie while Kamila made another call.

Manny stood next to me, his hands pushed into his trouser pockets. “What are you thinking, Doc?”

“Kamila is well-organised and has many contacts.”

Manny grunted. “I would prefer to know your thoughts about this bloody professor.”

“Then your question should be specific.” I glanced at him and wasn’t surprised to see him glare at me. I shrugged. “I haven’t yet formed a definite opinion about the professor. I know too little.”

“For the love of Pete.” Manny sighed heavily. “Just tell me if you think this man could be Mondi.”

I considered my answer. “It is possible and probable, but the only connection to any of the crimes in Italy we have is the IP address Francine had traced here. His connection to the flat with the Matejko murals is noteworthy, but it’s not evidence of him being the person who’d been intimidating the Camorra clans in Italy.”

Manny turned his frustrated gaze at the house. “I hope someone has the bloody keys to this castle.”

“It’s not a castle.” It was a large house secured by a two-meter-tall stone wall. The motorised driveway gate, as well as the smaller one we were facing at the moment, were made of solid steel and painted dark green—the same colour as the roof. Most of the houses on this street were behind high walls. Only two had palisade fencing that showed off beautiful gardens.

“There’s no one inside.” Wiktor’s statement shook me out of my musings. He was holding what appeared to be a remote control with a screen. No sooner had he said this than a drone flew over the gate and landed at his feet.
