Chapter 13

Cain

“You don’t have to go through with anything now. You probably think I’m disgusting,” I said as she continued to cry on my shoulder. I wasn’t sure why she was still touching me. There was no way she would want to be around me. Not now. Not knowing that I was the offspring of a rapist. His DNA was laced into my own. I wasn’t any better. I couldn’t be.

Half of who I was, was a complete monster.

“What?” she asked, her beautiful face turning up to look at mine. “I don’t think you’re disgusting.” Her voice was so soft, gentle.

“How couldn’t you? You heard what I just said. My father is a rapist. That’s why I’m here. He violated my mother, and I was the evidence. How could you want to be anywhere near a man like me?” I pushed away from her, moving to the other side of the room. I didn't want to be near her when she left. I was scared that I would beg her to stay. I was so desperate for her that it scared me. She made me feel out of control and in desperate need. I was scared what that need would make me do. If I ever hurt her, I would die.

She rose from the bed and walked to me, her gaze fixed on my own.

God, she was so beautiful. An angel.

“Cain, that wasn’t your fault,” she whispered, her hand slowly moving to my face until I felt the warmth from her fingers brushing against my cheek. I turned my face into her palm, desperate to keep her touch there for eternity.

“I need you. You touching me isn’t helping the matter.”

“Good. I want you to need me. I like being needed,” she said, stepping closer, so close that I could feel the heat radiating from her body. I wanted to bury myself in her heat. I wanted her so much that it made it hard to think, and right now I needed to be able to think, to process. I needed things to be clean, and Ellie made everything a mess. When she touched me, the only thing I could think of was her touch, of how she tasted on my lips and my tongue.

“Cain, I want to be here.”

“Then why were you so upset?”

“Because you had a vasectomy,” she whispered. “I just always thought I would have kids. Then here you come along, and you’re so much more than I ever expected. But I want this—I want you.”

Her words floored me. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. She didn’t think I was a disgusting monster. She thought I was worth something. I was somebody to her. Even knowing the truth, something I’d never told anyone before, she wanted me, wanted to be with me.

“I can’t have kids, Ellie. I can’t risk passing on my garbage genes to someone innocent. I can’t do that.”

“What about you is so evil, Cain? You spend your life helping women and children, the homeless, veterans. You could be out with women hanging all over you, partying, living it up.
