The change went over poorly with Catwoman readers. Despite creative shifts elsewhere in the industry, Balent had developed a significant fan base, and sales dropped noticeably when he left the series. The chart above shows the sales for Catwoman before and after Balent’s departure. While Balent’s last few issues benefited from a sales bump due to a crossover with the “No Man’s Land” event, Balent’s finale was the bestselling issue in well over a year. Even before “No Man’s Land” began, sales on Catwoman had evened out at just over thirty thousand copies a month. The book wasn’t a bestseller, but it had steadied at a decent level. Catwoman’s sales dropped to less than thirty thousand copies a month just two issues after Balent’s departure, and only broke the thirty thousand barrier once more after that owing to a tie-in with yet another event, “Officer Down.” By the end of the series’ run, Catwoman had fallen to the twenty-five thousand range and was canceled and then relaunched soon after.
