Jimmy Gibbs, sporting shorter hair and wearing his dress blues, drew the attention of several women at the reception. Their attempts to draw him into conversation ended with a polite but subtle display of his wedding ring. Most got the hint, except a rather persistent blonde in her mid-thirties who insisted on engaging him in a discussion about her conquests of other special forces members.

“I’ve known several SEALs, James. You’re different.”

He smiled politely, glanced at her, and then returned his attention to the gathering. When he caught sight of the senator, he said, “How so?”

“At this time of the evening, most would have asked me if I’d like to find someplace a little more private.”

“I like crowds.”

“Yes, but it is hardly a convenient way to get to know each other better.”

He saw Knoll approaching and turned to the woman. “I don’t mean to be rude, but I am very married, happily I might add, and don’t feel the need to know you better. Excuse me. I have to go.” He turned and worked his way through the crowd to where Knoll stood waiting.

When he reached the big man, Knoll said, “Pretty lady. Making plans?”

“She was. I chose not to.” He scanned the room again and caught sight of Emily Soon. “When are we doing this?”

“Sean’s waiting at the front exit. I’ll run interference with the bodyguards. How long do you need to get the sample?”

“All I need to do is to brush past her. She shouldn’t feel a thing.”

“Then, let’s get this done.”

The two men worked their way through the crowd toward the location where the senator stood. She appeared to be chatting with three men in suits. Her bodyguards, five feet behind, made sure no one approached from the rear.

Moving perpendicular to the space between the senator and the two men, Knoll would be closer to the bodyguards, and Gibbs would brush against the woman.

The whole incident took less than twenty seconds from beginning to end.

As they moved toward the senator, one of the large men behind her attempted to block Knoll’s path with an outstretched arm.

“Sorry, sir, this…”

Knoll growled at him. “You sure you want to touch me?” While the guard was big, he looked up at the slightly taller, more muscular ex-Army Ranger.

While this confrontation drew the attention of both the senator’s protectors, Gibbs, using Knoll as a shield, quickly touched the small needle to an exposed part of Soon’s arm. Just as fast, he returned it to his pocket and kept on walking, leaving Knoll to contend with the men.

When the senator turned to see what was occurring behind her, she could be seen rubbing a spot on her arm. “What’s going on back here?”

The one who stopped Knoll said, “We were making sure no one got to close to you, Senator Soon.”

She frowned. “Do you see the tan beret this gentleman is wearing?”

Both men said, “Yes, ma’am”, in unison.

“Obviously, you don’t know what it means. He is an Army Ranger. Let him pass, Greg.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

The senator peered up at Knoll.
