Chapter Nine
Tieg
Jamieâs sigh over speakerphone filled the hotel room. âSome people might take that as a rejection.â
âYou think?â I turned my head slowly to face the phone. Iâd been lying here staring at the ceiling all morning, wallowing in self-pity and biding my time before I had to head to sound check at the venue.
And by âvenueâ I meant the big field behind old McGregorâs property, where the concert was to be held.
âBut not you,â she added, a note of delusional optimism lacing her voice.
I sighed. âNo. Not me.â
My best friend knew me well. Maybe one of the reasons weâd clicked when Iâd first met her in New York three years ago was because we were both delusional optimists. Her because sheâd had a sheltered childhood, filled with the sort of luxury and lavishness befitting a princess, and meâ¦
Well, there was only one reason Iâd not only survived my rough childhood but come out of it an optimist. Daisy. Sheâd saved me. Sheâd given me love when no one else had; sheâd seen potential in me when I hadnât seen it in myself.
Now it was my turn.
âI have to help her, Jamie,â I said.
Jamieâs boyfriend Alexâs voice came over the speakerâfrom the background noise it sounded like they were in a car. âDude, I know you want to help her, but it sounds like she needs some space.â
Jamie made a scoffing sound. âUgh, donât listen to Alex. He might be a skilled athlete, but he doesnât know the first thing about relationships.â There was laughter in her voice as she said it, and I found myself grinning and shaking my head as they teased each other in a way that was both disgustingly sweet and just plain disgusting.
Or maybe I was just jealous. There was a very distinct possibility that I was jealous. What I wouldnât give to have that with Daisy right nowâthe sort of teasing, fun, lighthearted friendship that was at the root of our undeniably complicated relationship.
âAre you two through?â I interrupted when Jamie made a supremely girlie squealing sound.
âSorry,â she said quickly.
âYeah, sorry man.â Alexâs voice was far more somber. âWeâre here for you if you need us.â
We. Us. I rolled my eyes a bit at the over-the-top coupledom happening in my friendâs world, but I was happy for her. She deserved a good guy like Alex, and he her. Plus, Iâd made out pretty well in this bargain, too. Alex seemed to be of the mindset that Jamieâs friends were his friends too, so Iâd gained a new friend when she and Alex made it official.
Actually, thanks to Jamie, I had a few new friends. Her new billionaire buddy, Oliver, and his girl Liv were a blast to hang out with when I was in New Yorkâ¦which wasnât as often as I liked.
Technically, I owned multiple homes, thanks to some savvy investing by my money guy. He and my manager made sure Iâd be set for life, and my assets included houses on three different continents.
