Bonnie nearly fainted when she heard Altheaâs declaration, and her first impulse was to dismiss it entirely.
But there was something about the woman that kept her from doing that, although Bonnie laughed to herself about it several times during the day. Still, she didnât tell anyone about it.
Then, though, a couple of hours after she stopped to eat, Bonnie threw up. This was most unusual for her; Bonnie tended to have a cast-iron stomach, to the point where she could probably count the number of times sheâd vomited on one hand.
She attached no meaning to it at the time, although Bonnie did notice that a strange sort of warm sensation surged through her once sheâd unloaded the food.
Still, Bonnie kept working, because the circumstances demanded it. She thought nothing of it that night, but then the next day, after supper, it happened again.
That got her attention.
The following day, Bonnie walked over to Doctor Jessupâs office after sheâd had lunch. She still hadnât thought about the most obvious possibility, and Bonnie was worried that something serious might be compromising her health.
Rachel Jessup, Aaron Jessupâs wife and nurse, checked her out as soon as she walked in, as a preliminary step. All of the town employees basically had near-instant access to either Rachel or Aaron, and Rachel told her this was a preliminary exam.
âHmm,â she said when sheâd finished. âWell, thereâs nothing obviously wrong with you.â
Bonnie took a deep breath. âThatâs good to know,â she replied. âThis sort of thing never happens to me, as a rule, so Iâve been wondering what on earth could be wrong.â
Rachel blinked, and then she grinned slightly. âThere is another possibility, you know,â she said, speaking off the cuff.
âWhat do you mean?â Bonnie asked.
Rachelâs grin grew. âWell, I did notice that your skin is glowing.â
âReally?â Bonnie said, and her concern began to grow. âI had no idea.â
Then Rachel shook her head. Might as well just blurt it out, she thought. Bonnieâs going to find out one way or another, and most likely very soon at that.
âYou could be with child, you know,â she said, trying to keep her tone matter of fact. âPregnant.â
âOh!â
