In the morning, the two young women, clad in bathrobes, burst out of their rooms at the same time. “Hey, let’s have breakfast at the Crescent Moon Café.”

“Only if you lend me some pants and sweater. I’m not going anywhere in my new concert dress.”

Elin laughed. “Step this way.”

They chatted as they got dressed. They were about to go when the doorbell rang. They looked at each other. “Who’s that coming so early?” said Elin.

“Open the door. We’ll see.”

“Oh, hi Irina,” Elin said. “I don’t have any pets, but please come in.”

“Thanks. Actually I want to talk to Marina.”

Elin showed the veterinarian into the living room and with a dramatic gesture held the door open for Marina. “I’ll go and order breakfast. See you at the café.”

Intrigued that Irina wanting to see her and had tracked her down to Elin’s house, Marina waited for her to speak. Was there anything a person could do without the whole town knowing about it?

“Did I interrupt something?” Irina said.

“Not really. Anything I can do for you?”

“Actually yes. Can you tell me what’s going on between you and Derek?”

Marina considered her visitor for a moment while understanding dawned on her. The woman had some claim on the doctor.

“Nothing, why?”

“Just the way he looks at you.”

“I haven’t noticed. We’ve been friends since kindergarten.” And more than friends but that she wasn’t going to tell anyone.

“I see.” Irina looked at her fingers busy shredding the pull tag of her parka.

“Is he your boyfriend?” Her own words gave a small jolt to Marina’s heart.

“Er...No...I was just talking. I-I came to remind you Kimnik is due for his shots.” Irina stood and hurried out the door.

Dumbfounded, Marina remained on the sofa trying to absorb what had just passed. Kimnik’s shots had nothing to do with Irina’s visit. The dog wasn’t even hers. It struck Marina that the vet was in love with Derek. She didn’t know what to do with the information, except that Irina saw her as an obstacle. Sighing, she went to join Elin at the café.

“So what did she want?”

“She wanted to know if there was anything between me and Derek.”

“Oh! Is she in his picture?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you?” Elin stretched her neck forward to look at Marina.

“Frankly I don’t know how to answer that. We were friends...” Under Elin’s doubting gaze, she amended, “okay sweethearts in high school. We haven’t seen each other for years, not since I went to Julliard. Does getting reacquainted count for anything?” Marina hid her discomfort. Nobody knew her secret. A secret she’d never divulge. Though she’d have to tell him sometime. Why? Why did she need to shatter this man’s life? The baby only existed in her womb for a scant four months. Dr. Derek Ruark didn’t need to know.

“All depends on how you mean by getting reacquainted.”

Marina was saved from responding right away by the arrival of the waitress bringing steaming cheese omelettes. They thanked her and for the next few minutes concentrated on the task of eating.
