Fifteen minutes later I knocked on the door of Micah’s house. He answered wearing only his board shorts, no shirt. I wasn’t quite sure I would ever get used to the island dress code—or lack of one, I should say.

“Hello, Ms. Dorigan,” he said. “Fancy seeing you here. I’ve just put on some tea. Would you like some?”

“This isn’t exactly a social visit,” I said, trying to look anywhere but his bare chest. I didn’t want him getting the wrong idea, especially after the intimate moment we’d had earlier up at the lighthouse.

“That’s too bad,” he said opening up the door to let me in. I walked past him and into the living room. “Let me guess: this is about your map.”

“Yes,” I said. “It was on my hands. Brad and Angelique told me you were a palm reader, and you might be able to help me figure out what it means.” I stopped for a second to ponder what I just said. “I can’t believe that actually came out of my mouth.”

“That’s nothing.” He smiled, grabbed a T-shirt off the couch, and threw it on. “Wait until I get done with you.”

He led me back to his office and I sat down once again on the red Victorian sofa while he rifled through a filing cabinet behind his desk.

“So, do you need me to hold your crystal ball for you while you call on the dark spirits?” I teased.

“I used to charge $350 an hour for this back in the States, you know,” he said.

“I guess that explains how you can afford this resort.”

He looked up at me with an amused look on his face. “I didn’t get this resort by reading people’s hands.”

“No? How did you get it, exactly?” I asked, looking out his giant window at the beach. The sun had already gone down behind the water, lighting up the horizon with an orange and pink glow.

“I manifested it,” he said matter-of-factly, going back to his files.

“You manifested it,” I repeated, turning my attention back to him. “Okay, I’ll bite. How did you manage that?”

“When you need things for what you’re supposed to do here, the universe provides,” he said.

“You just happened to need a resort on a tropical island?”

“I needed a place to help people. The powers that be thought the best place for that would be this island. I happened to agree.”

“So you just woke up one day and someone gave you this resort?” I asked.

“Nope, I won the lottery. Then I bought the resort.” He grabbed a large manila folder out of the file then headed towards me, dragging the rolly chair from his desk behind him.

“You’re kidding.” My mouth dropped open. “Maybe after the palm-reading thing you can teach me about manifesting.”

“What do you think I’ve been trying to do this whole time?”

“Honestly, Micah, I have no idea.” I sighed. “You aren’t exactly forthcoming about it.”

He gave me a big, mysterious smile that indicated that for once we were in perfect agreement, then
