And so the following morning, Rebecca, Katie and Ronan were in Rebecca’s living room, giggling like children. The coffee table was covered with croissant crumbs and an empty cafetière sat on the floor. Rebecca was in her Agent Provocateur negligée. She wore just a tiny bit of makeup and her hair was tousled. Ronan wore nothing but a towel wrapped round his waist. A Tesco’s bag sat on his knee. Only Katie, in cords and a jumper, was decent.

‘Turn the music up,’ Rebecca commanded, gesturing at the stereo.

Ronan grabbed the remote. Moorcheeba boomed through the room. Rebecca glanced at her watch. ‘He’s late. For a bloody change.’

‘He’ll be here soon,’ Katie soothed her. She picked up the Daily Mail. ‘Do you want your horoscope?’

‘No, thanks, there isn’t time.’

Ronan was rifling through the plastic bag. ‘Christ, look at this!’ he yelped. He held up a claret and blue football shirt. ‘You never told me he was a West Ham supporter.’

‘Is West Ham bad?’ Rebecca asked.

Ronan was about to explain just how bad, but Rebecca interrupted him.

‘Katie, do you have to rush off after this?’

‘No. Do you want me to do some cleaning?’

Rebecca looked uncomfortable. ‘Well, actually there was something else I’d like to talk to you about.’

Before she could say more, the doorbell rang. Everyone jumped to their feet.

‘OK,’ said Katie. ‘Count to ten, then action.’

‘Ten, nine, eight,’ they all chanted. It rang again. ‘Go on,’ said Rebecca to Ronan.

Ronan ambled over to the door. His shoulder muscles were rippling. God, he was sexy, Katie thought happily. How could that cow Suzy not have appreciated him?

‘Yeah,’ he drawled into the entryphone.

‘Rebecca?’ squawked a male voice.

‘Uh,’ said Ronan sleepily. ‘Um. Rebecca’s asleep right now.’

‘Oh? Well, can you wake her up?’

‘She’s pretty out of it.’

‘But we had an appointment.’

‘Did you? Oh. Well, I’m sure I can help. Come up.’ Ronan buzzed Tim in, while Rebecca and Katie bent double with silent giggles.

‘OK,’ said Katie. ‘Into the bedroom, Rebecca. I’m going to hide in the spare room.’

The lift took about a minute. Then the buzz of the front door.

Ronan walked slowly to it and opened it, scratching his head and yawning.

On the threshold, Tim looked put out.

‘Er, hello. So is – um – Rebecca here?’

Ronan yanked at the towel around his waist. ‘Sorry, mate, I told you, she’s asleep.’

‘She knew I was coming round.’

‘Yeah,’ Ronan grinned. ‘But she’s a little bit tired now. Doesn’t matter. I’ve got what you came for.’

He ambled into the centre of the room, giving Tim a perfect view of his broad, brown smooth back, the result of hundreds of unemployed hours spent lying in the park. ‘It’s this, isn’t it?’ he said, holding up the Tesco’s bag.

Tim snatched it. ‘Thanks.’

From the bedroom came Rebecca’s voice, lazy and sated. ‘Honey, what’s going on? Come here.’

‘Just a minute,’ shouted Ronan. He smiled at Tim, his long lashes fluttering on his cheeks. ‘So, mate. I’ll be seeing you then.’

Tim made for the door as if the floor was on fire. ‘Thanks,’ he stuttered again.
